East Georgia State College honors Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with "The Journey" Celebration

East Georgia State College (EGSC) hosted a special event called "The Journey" on January 14, 2025, to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The event took place at 6:00 p.m. in the Luck Gambrell Building Auditorium and brought together students, staff, faculty, and the local community to celebrate Dr. King’s lasting impact on civil rights and social justice.

The evening was a powerful reminder of how we can come together as a community. Attendees watched a compelling theatrical production that highlighted Dr. King’s life, his vision, and his dream. Zaylin Lee, playing Coretta Scott King, and Deivion Davis, playing young Martin Luther King Jr., both students at Swainsboro High School, gave strong performances. Mike Celestin, an EGSC employee and assistant coach, portrayed adult Martin Luther King Jr., inspiring the audience with his heartfelt performance. The full cast included EGSC students, faculty and staff, and local community members. The event also included performances by the MLK Commemoration Choir, which made the tribute even more special.

EGSC President Dr. David Schecter commented, “EGSC has a rich history of honoring the past and paying tribute to important figures and events that have shaped our lives. This year’s MLK celebration was one of the best we’ve ever had on campus. It was a powerful and moving story not just about Dr. King’s life, but also about the importance of his family and friends in the larger movement. We hope the community enjoyed The Journey as much as we did producing it.”

The event was free and open to the public, inviting everyone to reflect, unite, and commit to building a more inclusive society. The entire performance of “The Journey” can be found on the East Georgia State College YouTube page at https://www.youtube.com/@EastGeorgiaStateCollege.
