East Georgia State College (EGSC) art students recently visited the SCAD Museum of Art and the Jepson Center in Savannah, Georgia. The two-dimensional design course students were chaperoned on the trip by Desmal Purcell, Professor of Art at EGSC.

The group started their tour at the SCAD Museum of Art where they received a personal welcome by Kristin Poitras, the Manager of Museum Programming and Visitation. Kristin introduced the group to their docent tour led by SCAD painting major Eli. On the tour they saw the ‘There is Peace Like a River’ exhibition (Gyun Hur), ‘JP@SCAD’ by artist Jorge Pardo, ‘Museum of the Lost’ (Strangers at Home by artists Leung Chi Wo and Sara Wong), ‘What a Relief’ by artist Josh Sperling, ‘1444’ by artist Hassan Hajjaj, ‘Façade’ by artist Rachel Feinstein, ‘Cosmic Generator’ by artist Mika Rottenberg, ‘Rejoice!’ by artist Ana Bel Lee Washington, ‘The Close of Day’ by artist Chase Hall, ‘Making the Birds Proud’ by artist Patrick Doughtrey and ‘Twelve Moons’ by artist Anne Craven. At the end of the tour, the students were personally greeted by Megan Tatom, the Deputy Director of Museum Operations.

After the tour of the SCAD Museum, the group walked to The Jepson Center for the Arts. The Jepson Center was designed by world renowned architect Moshe Safdie, who is highlighted in Professor Purcell's lecture courses. They had a chance to admire the exterior architecture before heading inside to experience the space and view the work on display. At the Jepson, they enjoyed several great exhibitions. The exhibitions included ‘Anything Goes: Contemporary Art and Materials’ (featuring works by a wide range of artists including Howard Finster, Whitfield Lovell and others), the exhibition ‘Bold Expressions: The Collection of Lorlee and Arnold Tenenbaum’ featuring works from artists Kara Walker, Zig Jackson, Diego Rivera, Marc Chagall, Andy Warhol and Juane Quick-To-See Smith. They also enjoyed the Duff Woon Yong exhibit ‘ookee’, the exhibit ‘Photography’s Last Century: The Ann Tenenbaum and Thomas H. Lee Collection’ (this collection featured numerous icons in the pantheon of photography including work by Dorothea Lang, Robert Frost, Richard Avedon, Andy Warhol, Alfred Stieglitz, Man Ray, Paul Strand, Edward Weston, Cindy Sherman and many more), and ‘Sensitive Contacts: Interactive Art’ by Scenocosme (this is an interactive new media exhibition that allowed students to participate with the various works on display).

After the Jepson they popped into the historic Telfair Museum. At the Telfair Museum the students took in the exhibition ‘Beyond Midnight: Bonaventure and the Bird Girl’, ‘Beyond the Sea: Impressionism and Modern Painting in Europe’, as well as replicas of famous Greek and Roman sculptures.

After an art fueled morning, the group enjoyed Vinnie Van Gogo's pizzeria. After dining in Franklin Square, they stopped by the Kobo Gallery where they met fiber artist Doris Grieder.

Throughout the day the students made images for an exhibition at the EGSC Student Gallery. The exhibition featured vector images created by or inspired by Savannah. The students transitioned the photos into vector-based designs.

EGSC students William Bennett, Gael Camarero, and Katelyn Ship participated in the trip to Savannah.
