East Georgia State College (EGSC) is hosting their Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Thursday, January 19. The event is open to the public and will be held at 6 p.m. in the auditorium of the Luck F. Gambrell Building on the Swainsboro campus of EGSC.  After the event, a candlelight vigil will be held outside the Gambrell Building.

The event will feature performances by Sounds of Gabriel and Asia Jennings. The guest speaker for the event is Jonathan Hampton.

Asia Jennings Johnathan Hampton

Asia Jennings is a 24-year-old aspiring actress, spoken word artist, and writer based in Georgia. Her love for the arts started in 2013 during her sophomore year in high school as an escape from the bullying that she endured from some of her peers.

The Augusta Mini Theatre alongside The Richmond Academy Players helped shape her into the emerging artist that she is. She attended East Georgia State College after high school to major in Political Science and Communication Arts where she gained a newfound love of spoken word poetry to express herself artistically during open mic nights.

As a spoken word artist, she calls herself "Groovygranmama" to express her love for the '70s as well as her old soul. Now, she has taken a break from college to focus on writing her one-woman show Voyage to Peace, which is in the works of being placed on tour. Furthermore, both spoken word and acting is an outlet for her to raise awareness for social issues that are dear to her.

The keynote speaker for the event, Reverend Jonathan Hampton, is a 1997 honor graduate of Swainsboro High School. He matriculated at Claflin University (’01) and graduated Suma Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Mass Communications with a concentration in television and radio production and minor in Political Science. He earned a Master of Science Degree in Administration from Central Michigan University (’04).

Hampton is a Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS) Horizon Scholar. He began an early broadcasting/production career in Hollywood California as an intern with The Price is Right, The Bold and the Beautiful, The Young and the Restless, and The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn.

Reverend Hampton’s commitment to public service led him to seek employment as a Contracting Officer with the Department of Defense for now, more than 2 decades. Currently, he continues his public service as a contracting officer and mentor at Robins Air Force Base in Warner Robins, Ga.

Hampton is committed to service to his community. He is the First-Vice President of the Emanuel County Branch of the NAACP, Emanuel County Community Coalition, and Emanuel County Resource Center. Hampton is also a brother of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. He serves as Pastor and Founder of Life Application Ministries Inc.

Reverend Jonathan Hampton is the proud husband of his lovely bride, Reverend Ranecci Hampton of 12 years, and father of three children Desiree, Jonathan II, and Joshua.

East Georgia State College would like to invite the community to attend the event to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
