East Georgia State College has named Bill Sasser as the head coach of the EGSC Tennis Team. The tennis team at EGSC was recently announced and will have its first season beginning in the Fall of this year.
Sasser is a native of Swainsboro, Georgia, and graduated from Swainsboro High School. He continued his education by attending Georgia Tech Engineering Extension School in 1960. After working for nine years as a construction engineer in industrial construction, he moved back to Swainsboro and started working as an architect. Sasser was self-employed until he retired in 2006.
Sasser’s tennis experience dates back to his high school career. He played at Swainsboro High School and was on his college’s tennis team. When he moved back to Swainsboro, he joined the United States Tennis Association and played in U.S.T.A. Tournaments. At one time Sasser was ranked fifth in the state of Georgia. In 2013 at the age of 75, he was the Georgia State Champion for Southern Georgia.
Sasser has helped coach the Swainsboro High School and Swainsboro Middle School tennis teams for several years. He also teaches private lessons.
"We are so honored to have Mr. Bill Sasser as our first tennis coach at EGSC for Fall 2022. He is a local tennis instructor and tennis legend who has taught hundreds of young people in the game of tennis. Mr. Bill was the best tennis player to ever come from Swainsboro, being ranked number five in the state by the USTA nationally. We are so proud and honored to have such a quality person to start our tennis program at EGSC," said EGSC Athletic Director Chuck Wimberly.
Sasser lives in Swainsboro with his wife Glinda. They have two children, four grandchildren, and one great grandchild.
