EGSC Augusta

EGSC Augusta
EGSC -- Augusta's administrative offices are located in Payne Hall (right) on GRU's Summerville campus.

Welcome to East Georgia State College -- Augusta!

East Georgia State College (EGSC) and Georgia Regents University (GRU) received approval from the University System of Georgia Board of Regents on May 14, 2013, to launch a cooperative academic program that will serve as an open door to higher education for Augusta area students who may not otherwise be eligible for regular admission into GRU.

GRU and EGSC are dedicated to student success, and together, we are working to promote the statewide goals of Complete College Georgia including providing students with a convenient and affordable access point and an opportunity to earn an associate’s degree while preparing to transfer into a bachelor’s degree program.

What these two great institutions are embarking on is not new, as this model for access has been implemented by EGSC in Statesboro. The EGSC - Statesboro campus has been in existence since 1997 and has garnered much success in preparing students for transfer to Georgia Southern University.

Similar to the Statesboro initiative, our partnership will enable Augusta students to remain in the area, providing them with a seamless transition to GRU, or any other institution, following their successful completion of 30 credit hours with a 2.0 or higher grade point average.

East Georgia State College – Augusta, replaces a program at GRU known as University College, and will be located on GRU’s Summerville campus offering Learning Support courses and classes that make up any Regents’ High School Curriculum deficiencies, as well as core curriculum courses. EGSC will charge EGSC tuition and fees, as well as GRU’s mandatory and elective fees which provide EGSC – Augusta students with access to student services on campus such as the University Wellness Center and computer labs.

With one of the lowest tuition rates in Georgia, East Georgia State College enables students in Augusta  to satisfy core classes more economically while excelling in a student-focused learning environment with small classes, individualized tutoring, and advisement in EGSC’s Academic Center for Excellence (ACE).

Both institutions are deeply committed to serving area high school students and active and retired military personnel. We seek to not only educate, but to retain the best and brightest students to meet the workforce needs of this region.

Let us help you achieve your educational goals!

After 30 semester hours and 2.0 GPA  you may transfer to Georgia Regents University. To make the transfer process as seamless as possible we host transfer sessions to aid with the move to Georgia Regents University.

We are excited that you’ve chosen East Georgia State College – Augusta to continue your education.  I look forward to meeting with you to discuss your educational future. My door is always open!

The Direct Loan Program offers the following types of loans:

Subsidized: for students with demonstrated financial need, as determined by federal regulations. No interest is charged while a student is in school at least half-time, during the grace period, and during deferment periods.
Unsubsidized: not based on financial need; interest is charged during all periods, even during the time a student is in school and during grace and deferment periods.
PLUS: unsubsidized loans for the parents of dependent students and for graduate/professional students. PLUS loans help pay for education expenses up to the cost of attendance minus all other financial assistance. Interest is charged during all periods.
Consolidation: Eligible federal student loans can be combined into one Direct Consolidation Loan.

Student borrowers are not required to begin making payments until after they drop below half-time attendance.
Your school will tell you how much you may borrow and the types of loans your are eligible to receive. The information below will give you an idea of how much you may be eligible to receive.

Note: PLUS loan borrowers cannot have an adverse credit history (a credit check will be done).

Accepting A Loan

Your school will notify you of the loan amounts that it is offering, usually in an "award letter" that lists all of your proposed financial aid awards (your award package).
You should evaluate the aid offer carefully. In the case of loans, keep in mind that whatever amount you borrow must be paid back with interest. If your living expenses are not as high as the standard allowance projected by your school, you may not have to borrow as much as the amount in the award letter.
To get an idea of your monthly loan payments after you graduate, take a look at our repayment calculator.
To get an idea of your college expenses, use our budget calculator.
You have the right to decline the loan or to request a lower loan amount. In the award letter your school will tell you how to do this.

Credit Check & Endorser Alternative

When you apply for a Direct PLUS Loan, the Department will check your credit history. To be eligible to receive a PLUS loan, you must not have an adverse credit history. If you are determined to have an adverse credit history, you may still receive a Direct PLUS Loan if you obtain an endorser who does not have an adverse credit history. An endorser is someone who agrees to repay the Direct PLUS Loan if you do not repay the loan. If you are a parent borrowing on behalf of your dependent student, the endorser may not be the student on whose behalf a parent obtains a Direct PLUS Loan. In some cases, you may also be able to obtain a Direct PLUS Loan if you document to our satisfaction that there are extenuating circumstances related to your adverse credit history.

Loan limits

The maximum amount you can borrow each year in Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans depends on your grade level and on whether you are a dependent student or an independent student. The following table shows the maximum amount of money you may borrow each academic year in Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans as well as the total or aggregate amount you may borrow:

Direct Stafford Loan Limits (Subsidized and Unsubsidized)

           Undergraduates

  Graduates
    Dependent Independent

1st year $5,500 ($3,500)³ $9,500 ($3,500) $20,500 ($8,5004) for each year
2nd Year $6,500 ($4,500) $10,500 ($4,500)
3rd and 4th year $7,500 ($5,500) $12,500 ($5,500)
Aggregate $31,000 ($23,000) $57,500 ($23,000) $138,5005 ($65,500)

1Except those whose parents are unable to borrow a PLUS loan.
2These limits also apply to dependent students whose parents are unable to borrow a PLUS loan.
3The numbers in parentheses represent the maximum amount that may be subsidized.
4Graduate and professional students are not eligible to receive Direct Subsidized Loans for loan  periods beginning on or after July 1, 2012.
5The aggregate amounts for graduate students include loans for undergraduate study.

The actual loan amount you are eligible to receive for an academic year is determined by your school and may be less than the maximum annual amounts shown in the chart above. The aggregate limits include both Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans and any subsidized and unsubsidized Stafford Loans received through the Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) Program.
With a Direct PLUS Loan, a graduate/professional student or the parent of a dependent student can borrow up to the cost of the student's attendance minus other financial aid the student receives.

Entrance Counseling

Except for parent Direct PLUS Loan borrowers, if you haven't previously received a loan, you must complete entrance counseling before your school can make the first disbursement of your loan. This helps you to understand your responsibilities regarding your loan.  East Georgia State College requires students to complete the Entrance Counseling on-line at www.studentloans.gov

Please view the instructional video below.

How to complete Entrance Loan Counseling:

The Master Promissory Note

To take out a Direct Loan for the first time, you must complete a Master Promissory Note (MPN). The MPN will be provided either by your school or the Department. You must complete the MPN online at the StudentLoans.gov website. The MPN is a legal document in which you promise to repay your loan(s) and any accrued interest and fees to the Department. It also explains the terms and conditions of your loan(s).

How to complete an (MPN) Master Promissory Note:

To complete an MPN online, you will be required to use your Department of Education-issued PIN. If you do not have a PIN, you may request one from the official PIN site.

A parent borrower must also request a PIN number from the PIN site to use when completing a PLUS MPN.

In most cases, once you've submitted the MPN and it's been accepted, you won't have to fill out a new MPN for future loans you receive. Unless your school does not allow more than one loan to be made under the same MPN, you can borrow additional Direct Loans on a single MPN for up to 10 years.

If you are applying for a Direct PLUS for the first time as a graduate/professional student, you'll need to complete and sign a PLUS MPN that is separate from the one that you use for your Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans.

How to complete a Parent PLUS MPN:

You'll receive a disclosure statement that gives you specific information about any loan that the school plans to disburse under your MPN, including the loan amount, fees, and the expected disbursement dates and amounts.

Exit Counseling

Exit counseling sessions are required of all borrowers of federal and University-administered student loan programs. Exit counseling provides you with information regarding the rights and responsibilities of a borrower and a lender/servicer. You learn about repayment, deferment, and cancellation of your loan. These sessions prepare you to be responsible and effective in repayment of your educational loans.

You are required to complete Exit Counseling when you:
•are about to graduate
•leave the University (even if it is just temporary)
•drop your registration below half-time enrollment
•transfer to another institution or leave for a National Student Exchange (NSE) experience.

Discover the World!  Discover Yourself!

Do you know who you are?  Do you know your place in the world?  Do you know what you want to do with the rest of your life?

If you talk to people who have studied abroad, they will most certainly tell you that it is a life-changing experience and one of the most rewarding things they have ever done.  And they would be right!  But if you've never been abroad, you may not be convinced that study abroad is worth your time, money, and effort.

Why Study Abroad?

Why not?  After all, in our global and competitive world, the reasons for studying abroad are nearly endless.  East Georgia State College students have an opportunity to take courses, learn languages, and volunteer abroad each summer.  They choose to integrate an international experience into their undergraduate careers for a variety of reasons - - but all come back with timeless stories, memorable experiences, and better academic and professional prospects.

The Study Abroad Advantage:

  • Gain a competitive edge for any resume, or graduate school application.
  • See the world from an entirely new perspective.
  • Develop new skills, independence, and the self-confidence needed to survive and succeed in the global marketplace.
  • Put theory to practice in the real world.
  • Acquire or improve foreign language skills.

What will you discover when you study abroad?

Art Explosion on Campus

At East Georgia State College, we are fortunate to enjoy a beautiful natural landscape complemented by modern facilities, all of which contribute to our successful academic learning environment. The Art Explosion on Campus initiative was established in 2012 to provide a visible extension to our educational and outreach mission. It is designed to provoke thought and reflect the importance of art in our everyday surroundings.

We have implemented a systematic catalogue and installation of artwork throughout East Georgia State College’s Swainsboro and Statesboro campuses. This program has allowed us to expand our unique college setting to facilitate creativity, improve the quality of life and connect us to the community-at-large.

Artwork is displayed in interior public spaces to serve as touchstones that encourage and enrich learning, foster an understanding of the interconnection between disciplines, and emphasize the importance of history and culture.

Art Collection

Campus exhibits feature artwork in our catalogued collection and encompass a wide range of mediums to illustrate cultural and artistic diversity. The collection includes art created by our students, faculty, staff and regional artists. Also featured is a commissioned collection of watercolor pieces by Georgia artist, Alan Campbell, highlighting local scenes in Emanuel County.

Self-Guided Art Tours

Our Art Explosion artwork is available for public viewing through self-guided tours during normal business hours, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.  For additional information, please contact the Office of Marketing and Community Relations.

Ethics and Compliance Reporting Hotline

East Georgia State College recognizes that an ethical, efficient, and effective work environment is essential to our continuing to successfully accomplish our mission. As a result, we have always placed a high priority on assuring that each member of our college community has the opportunity and means to convey any matter that could compromise that environment.

In keeping with our efforts to expand alternatives for reporting matters of significance, we have now added Hotline reporting through a service provided by an independent company, Global Compliance. This service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and allows you to voice your concerns, and to remain anonymous if you prefer. This service allows you to anonymously send additional information if available, attachments and also receive feedback or questions on your report via a report number and PIN.

This service is more than just a Hotline through which individuals can report issues of suspected fraud, waste or abuse. We also want to also solicit questions, comments and feedback about areas which could be streamlined and made more efficient and effective.

Your input is essential to ensure that East Georgia State College maintains a positive, productive workplace. This is your system and we encourage you to use it – together we will achieve excellence.

Meet Austin Carruth

Austin Carruth

Austin Marie Carruth was crowned Miss East Georgia State College on February 2, 2013. Since that time, she has busily served as a poised and exuberant ambassador for EGSC.

Although Austin’s mother, Cherry Carruth, competed in the Miss Georgia Organization, she was hesitant to allow Austin to compete in the highly competitive world of pageantry. However, Austin has flourished in the system since her debut at 18 years old, winning almost $3,000 in scholarships and placing as 1st Runner up in numerous Miss Georgia preliminaries, before winning her dream title as Miss EGSC.

When describing herself, Austin says she is “creative, helpful, and blessed” and says she is so thankful to have the opportunity to represent a college whose growth is exponential and guaranteed.

Community Service

Austin is making a difference at EGSC and in her local community through her various volunteer efforts and opportunities.

Austin has volunteered with the Salvation Army, Alex’s Lemonade Stand (Childhood Cancer Organization), CURE, EGSC Ambassadors, Shepeard Community Blood Center, Children’s Miracle Network, Relay For Life, Allstar Dance, and Tri-M Music Society.

She is also a member United Primitive Baptist Church in Swainsboro, Georgia.

Engaging With Other Pageants and Contestants

Austin is active in the pageant circuit, and frequently emcees pageants in the surrounding area. She also draws from her vast pageant experiences by coaching pageant participants in areas such as Evening Gown
and Interview.

Austin Carruth- “Childhood Cancer Awareness”

Austin selected her platform due to her brother, Zach Carruth, being diagnosed with cancer at the age of nine. Being offered surgical removal of his ganglion cyst, Zach was fortunate not to have to suffer chemotherapy or radiation as a method of treatment. However, this was a wake-up call for Austin and her family and showed them the preciousness of life. She decided to further research childhood cancer facts, statistics, and survival rates and discovered just how many are truly affected by this dreaded disease.

Austin has been involved in numerous childhood cancer volunteer fundraising projects, such as Alex’s Lemonade Stand, an organization started by a young girl dealing with childhood cancer, where Austin sold lemonade to raise money in order to find a cure. Austin also donated her time at Summer’s Concert in the Park in Dublin, Georgia, where she sang in the concert and volunteered at activity booths. Through the pageant circuit, Austin has competed in and volunteered for pageants geared towards raising money and promoting childhood cancer awareness, such as Miss Summer’s Dream and Miss South Georgia Princess.

Austin hopes to continue to support the awareness of childhood cancer by visiting the children and family affected by this disease. She will continue volunteer work to raise money for various organizations. Her hope is to start her own childhood cancer benefit pageant.

The Future for Austin

Austin’s dream job is to become a singer, but for now she is double majoring in Journalism and Business. She has already begun her Journalism career with publications in Something Special Magazine, based out of Savannah, Georgia.

Austin will graduate in December 2013 from East Georgia State College with an Associate’s Degree, and she will then transfer to Armstrong Atlantic State University in Savannah, Georgia or the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

It is an honor to have Austin Marie Carruth represent East Georgia State College in the 2013 Miss Georgia Pageant. She truly is a genuine and exuberant young woman whose intelligence, talent, and entertaining personality will propel her to excel in life in whatever she is determined to do.

Please note that Orientation is mandatory for ALL incoming students to East Georgia State College (exceptions include Dual Enrolled, Transients, Former Students, and Non-Degree Seeking students). Incoming new students that fail to attend Orientation will be allowed to only register for classes during the late registration process, which means you may not be able to get the course or professor you were hoping for. A hold will be placed on your student record requiring attendance at a ‘late’ orientation program with the date of event to be determined by the Admissions Office. Students enrolling at the Statesboro campus will attend P.A.W.S. at Statesboro and students enrolling at the Swainsboro campus will attend P.A.W.S. in Swainsboro. However, due to limited spacing students are allowed to only bring ONE guest.

The P.A.W.S. Orientation program is for YOUR benefit to help you to be the most successful student you can be! In order to attend Orientation and register for classes you must be accepted to East Georgia State College. If you have not been accepted, you will need to check your admissions status to see what outstanding requirements you have that may be preventing your file from being complete or if any COMPASS testing must occur. We no longer test students for the COMPASS at Orientation so you must take care of that prior to attending an Orientaiton date . Upon acceptance, you can select the P.A.W.S. link above and then choose which Orientation you would like to attend. We look forward to having you become part of the EGSC family! If you have any questions or concerns prior to your attendance, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Critical Thinking

Critical Thinking

The Art of Critical Thinking

East Georgia State College recognizes the importance of students possessing critical thinking skills that allow them to effectively integrate the content of their courses and apply what they learn to the challenges and opportunities that await them outside the classroom.

Presented below is the general definition of critical thinking the College will use to guide its Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP).

Critical thinking involves questioning, analyzing, discussing, debating, and critiquing data to develop sound conclusions. Individual components of the College’s definition of critical thinking are further defined:

Questioning is the process of identifying problems and determining related tasks and issues.
Analyzing is the process of investigating data to determine the structure, validity, and relevance of the data.
Discussing is a method for multiple parties to engage in a productive, verbal exchange leading to sound conclusions.
Debating is the ability to use supporting facts and arguments to persuasively present a case in a forum of competing perspectives to reach rational conclusions and effective compromises.
Critiquing is the process of evaluating arguments using logic and inference.

Critical Thinking and Student Learning Outcomes

The faculty at East Georgia State College has long recognized the ability to think critically as an important component of an effective general education curriculum. Critical thinking is included among the College’s general education student learning outcomes as SLO No. 3: Students will demonstrate skill in logic and critical thinking.

The concept of critical thinking is not new to EGSC; many courses include a focus on assessing data and thinking critically. However, there has not been a formalized plan on the campus that would give weight to all stakeholders becoming involved in thinking critically, modeling the behavior for students, and consciously incorporating the concept in the presentation of course content to students.

Our QEP plan involves the commitment of faculty, staff, and community members in providing students with the tools and skills needed to think critically both in their academic studies and in real life after college. Our QEP also provides a blueprint for imbedding critical thinking into the College’s revised core curriculum.

The measurement of specific critical thinking skills will be facilitated through the assessment of the following student learning outcomes based on the College’s definition of critical thinking.

Question - Students will be able to identify a problem or conflict, determine the related factors and outline the necessary steps for a solution.
Analyze - Students will be able to analyze primary data or sources to determine their structure, validity and usefulness.
Discuss - Students will be able to engage in productive verbal communication of ideas in a classroom setting, working toward a solution or conclusion.
Debate - Students will be able to use facts and viewpoints to present a persuasive argument in a forum of competing perspectives to achieve rational conclusions and effective compromises.
Critique - Students will be able to research opposing arguments in a controversial issue and evaluate the strength of the arguments to determine the student's stance.

Critical Thinking Conference held at EGSC-Statesboro, Friday, April 12, 2013

"Critical thinking is a desire to seek, patience to doubt, fondness to meditate, slowness to assert, readiness to consider, carefulness to dispose and set in order; and hatred for every kind of imposture." Francis Bacon (1605)

East Georgia State College held its first Critical Thinking Conference on Friday, April 12, 2013, at the Statesboro campus. Critical thinking is an important aspect of education across disciplines, and many institutions are working to promote and focus on integration of critical thinking exercises in their curriculum. Today it has moved beyond the traditional formal reasoning to incorporate the skills necessary to maneuver through modern information overload such as problem solving, communication, and creativity. This is arguably one of the most important skills students can learn, and it can be applied to every discipline. At East Georgia State College, promotion of critical thinking is an important component of the curriculum, and this conference was organized to allow educators to share both research and practical applications of critical thinking in the classroom.

COMPASS Test

The College Placement Exam, COMPASS, is a computerized placement exam that tests reading, writing, and math skills. COMPASS exam requirements are determined by the SAT Critical Reading and Math scores or ACT English and Math scores, in addition to, meeting the 4 Required High School Curriculum (RHSC) units. Students are required to take the COMPASS placement exam prior to P.A.W.S. New Student Orientation in order to determine specific requirements for remediation in Reading, English, and Mathematics as well as admissability. The Office of Admissions offers the exam to  students Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00 am and 3:00 pm, no appointment is necessary.  If you are a student that needs accommodations on our COMPASS Exam or have an IEP, you will need to coordinate these accommodations with the Counseling and Disability Services Office (478) 289-2039.

Beginning Summer semester 2012 and thereafter, the COMPASS test is used as an entrance exam to determine admissibility to East Georgia State College.

We can accept equivalent COMPASS scores from any USG, COC-accredited, and non-COC-accredited TCSG institutions; however we are unable to accept the Pre-Algebra section in lieu of the Algebra Section. Any student that has tested at an institution other than East Georgia State will need to have those scores forwarded to the Admissions office.

Students who wish to take the Compass for another institution or for POST-certification will be required to pay a $25 fee and will be tested on an as-available basis after students for EGSC have been tested.

Exemption Information

Incoming freshmen are required to take the exam, unless they can exempt due to entering ACT or SAT scores and the completion of 4 Required High School units of English and 4 Required High School units of Math. The exemption scores are as follows:

SAT Critical Reading score ≥ 430 or ACT English ≥ 17
SAT Math score ≥ 400 or ACT Math ≥ 17
GHSGT-ELA Score ≥ 235 (Satisfies only the Writing and Reading Compass sections)

East Georgia State College established minimum COMPASS Entrance scores in each subject area. Students scoring below the minimum scores will not be eligible for admission.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What will academic counseling be like?

Sessions will vary for each student, as individual needs will dictate how often we meet and what we will work on in session.  Some students meet on a weekly basis for a short session to make sure they’re staying on track, and others only need a few sessions to learn the skills they need and do not need to follow up.  In our initial appointment we will discuss your concerns and develop a plan for counseling that we can modify as needed to meet your needs.

How can academic counseling help me?

Academic counseling can help students who are struggling with their coursework due to a variety of reasons.  We can help you develop a schedule or learn how to use a planner, as well as give tips on organizational techniques.  If study skills are your area of concern, we can help you determine your learning style, and then discuss study skills/habits that will be most effective for you.  One major concern many students bring to us is test anxiety.  This is an area where we can teach you techniques to manage the anxiety as well as how to better prepare yourself for exams.

If you feel like you may be getting off course with your academics, we can help!

Is academic counseling tutoring?

Academic counseling is not a tutoring service.  For information about EGSC’s free tutoring services, click here.

How do I know how much my tuition and fees are?

Email invoices are sent to students' East Georgia State College Cat Mail account after registration.  You can also check your Banner Web account to determine your tuition and fee charges.

If I am receiving financial aid, how can I determine if it has been processed and applied to my charges?

Check your Banner Web account to determine if your financial aid has been applied to your charges.

If my financial aid has been processed and I am receiving a refund, when will it be available?

East Georgia State College and HigherOne have formed a partnership to handle refunds. The first disbursement of Financial Aid Refunds for a semester is usually two to three weeks into the semester. Subsequent disbursement of Financial Aid Refunds will continue each Thursday. The financial aid disbursement date to your student account is not the date refunds are released to HigherOne.  If you are receiving a loan, the lender’s disbursement date is not the date refunds are released to HigherOne.

How will I receive my HigherOne MyOne Card?

After you have completed your registration, a card file will be sent form us to HigherOne.  The card will be mailed from HigherOne not EGSC.  The card will be mailed to the student’s legal address on file with the college. Don't lose your card or throw it away – It will cost you $20 to get a new one. Once you receive your HigherOne MyOne Card in the mail, visit http://www.MyOneMoney.com to choose your refund preference.

• When activating your HigherOne MyOne Card it will prompt you for an EGSC Email Password…this is the last 4 digits of your SSN and the last 2 digits of your birth year.

Funds are sent from EGSC to HigherOne, who then disburses them according to your preference.  If you do not activate your card, you will not receive a refund. Funds are typically available for disbursement to HigherOne two to three weeks after classes start.

Why do I need to choose a refund preference with HigherOne if I am not receiving Financial Aid?

All student refunds are sent to HigherOne for disbursement.

Example:  Student pays for classes out-of-pocket and then withdraws – any money EGSC owes the student, because of the withdrawal, would be sent to HigherOne for disbursement. For HigherOne MyOne card questions, please contact Pamela Herrington at (478)289-2024.

Will I be able to use my financial aid to purchase books?

If your financial aid award amount has been “memo/authorized” to your student account and exceeds the amount of tuition and fees you owe, you may be able to charge books at the East Georgia State College Bookstore using a percentage of those funds.  However, you must give EGSC permission to deduct additional charges from excess financial aid.

How do I authorize EGSC to deduct additional charges from excess financial aid?

Four questions will pop up when you log in to Banner Web for the first time. These questions are asking you whether or not you want the Business Office to use your financial aid to pay for other charges such as books, prior semester charges, or non-institutional charges such as parking tickets, fines, etc.

If I don't receive financial aid, when must I pay my tuition and fees?

It is a Board of Regents policy that all tuition and fees are due upon registration.  Final fee payment deadline is the date by which all tuition and fees must be paid to prevent cancellation of your classes.  Final Fee Payment Deadline will be posted on the Academic Calendar and e-mail invoices will be sent to student Cat Mail accounts.

How and where do I pay tuition and fees?

You may pay tuition and fees using the following methods:

  • CASH – Payments by cash should be made at the Business Office on the Swainsboro campus. Our office at East Georgia State College - Statesboro does not accept cash amounts greater than $80.00.

PayPath accepts American Express, Discover Card, and MasterCard and charges a 2.75 percent convenience fee per transaction. **PayPath does not accept VISA!!!

What is career counseling like?

Career counseling is generally briefer than other kinds of counseling.  We will begin by discussing some general information about your career interests and values and assist you in completing a career assessment to determine your career interests, aptitudes, and values as well as explore your Holland Code.  Your Holland code is your personality type or “Career Personality” (RIASEC- Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, and Conventional).  It is important that students choose careers that are congruent with these areas so that their career choice is a good match for them. Choosing a career is one of the most important things that you will do as a college student.  Taking the time now to do your research and make a well informed decision about your career field will pay off tremendously.  As you enter your career, you’ll be glad you took the time to ask questions and to complete thorough career exploration.  Our office can assist you in your career assessment and career exploration efforts.

Can you help me determine what school(s) offers the major I am looking for?

Yes, we can show and demonstrate some tools that you can use to assist you in locating this information as well as answer questions that you might have regarding majors and which school(s) may be a good fit for your career aspirations.

Can you assist me in developing a resume?

Yes, we can assist you in developing a resume that is appropriate for a particular type of job.  We are also available to review resumes and provide input/feedback.

What about cover letters?

We can also help you to develop cover letters specific to a particular job that you’re applying for.  We can also provide input/feedback on a cover letter you have written.

What about Internships (Experiential Learning Opportunities)?

We can assist you in obtaining information on internship opportunities.

When can I apply for services?

We recommend that students initiate contact as soon as they are accepted as a student at EGSC.  We recommend being proactive in submitting documentation for review, especially if there is possibly a need for updated documentation.  Keep in mind, having documentation reviewed does not mean that you have to utilize our services.  If you later choose to not receive accommodations, this is your choice!
The time between initially submitting documentation and receiving determination of eligibility can sometimes take several weeks and obtaining updated testing can take several months, especially during high volume times at the RCLD.  If you are requesting accommodations that may take a longer time to prepare (i.e. interpreter for the hearing impaired, books in alternative format, special furniture/classroom arrangements etc), we ask for at least 6 weeks notice to ensure accommodations are in place by the start of the semester.

What kinds of disabilities qualify me to receive accommodations?

Covered disabilities include both visible and invisible disabilities.  Some examples include ADD/ADHD, physical/medical disorders, vision/hearing impairments, psychological disorders, and learning disorders.  If you have a question regarding eligibility, please contact us to discuss your concerns.

Where can I send my documentation?

If you know where you will be attending, please send your documentation to the corresponding office.  If you are unsure, send it to our main office in Swainsboro.  You can submit documentation via mail, fax or email.  We ask that if you plan on faxing or mailing your documentation that you call first so that we will know to look for it!  This also helps us make sure we can get your contact information and an idea of how we may help you.

What about temporary disabilities?

Sometimes students encounter disabilities that are temporary, such as a broken arm or a temporary illness.  In these cases we can often arrange for temporary accommodations if we have adequate documentation.  Please contact our office for more information.

Should I go ahead and obtain updated testing since my documentation is from high school?

Not necessarily.  We recommend that students discuss with us what their current documentation is before pursuing updated testing which can often be expensive and time consuming.  Depending on when the documentation was completed and how thorough it is, you may very well be approved for permanent accommodations based on what you already have.  We also provide temporary accommodations for at least 1 semester for students who have documentation but need time to obtain updated testing.  Generally though, documentation must be completed within 3 years from when the student is seeking accommodations.

Must I disclose my disability as soon as I become a new student at EGSC?

No!  You may choose to disclose your disability at any point during your career at EGSC.  We have many students who initially do not wish to seek accommodations, but later decide that they need to.  We also have many students who set up accommodations initially, but find that they do not need to use them.  When and how often accommodations are utilized is completely up to you, the student.  We do, however, recommend coming to speak with a counselor as soon as you notice your disability may be affecting your academics so that we can discuss your concerns and difficulties.  And remember, the college is not responsible for making accommodations for students who have not disclosed their disability and have not provided appropriate documentation.

How long will my accommodations be effective?

For students approved for temporary accommodations, these will be effective from the day the contract is completed, until the last day of finals for the semester the accommodations are granted.  In some cases we can extend temporary accommodations beyond one semester if a student is in the process of obtaining updated testing/documentation but has not received results back yet.  For students approved for permanent accommodations, these will be effective from the date we complete contracts throughout your college career.  You WILL have to renew contracts each semester you wish to use accommodations, but you will not be required to submit further documentation.  Permanent accommodations granted through the RCLD will be honored at any school within the University System of Georgia.

If you have discussed your accommodations with your instructor and obtained their signature on your contract, but are still having difficulty receiving the accommodations, please contact one of our staff members to discuss the issue.  Our job is to help communicate between you and your professor if an issue arises.  Most of the time when accommodations aren’t being received as they should be, it is a matter of misunderstanding or miscommunication.  Remember, we can’t help you if we don’t know, so please contact us in the event this occurs!

What is the Regents Center for Learning Disorders (RCLD)?

The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia has set up three of these centers to help students with learning disorders by providing assessments, reviewing documentation and approving permanent accommodations within the University System.  Each center serves about a dozen schools within the University system.  East Georgia State College works in conjunction with the RCLD located at Georgia Southern University.  To learn more about them, click here.  The RCLD not only works directly with schools, but also with students and parents.  Do not hesitate to call them directly with questions!

What type of ID do I need to get a library card? Check out a book?

Will my parents, family, friends or professors know I am coming to counseling?

All of the services provided by the Counseling and Disability Services Office are confidential.  Our staff adheres to professional, legal and ethical guidelines that protect your personal information.  This means any information about your contact with our office will not become part of your academic record and cannot be released to any office or individual without your consent.  You may choose to sign a release of information form to allow us to communicate with family or friends and you can choose what information they have access to (ex. Contact in emergencies only).  We will be sure to discuss confidentiality with you in detail at your first appointment.  It is important to note that there are some exceptions to confidentiality.  As counselors, we are mandated to report some information which may include intent to harm yourself or others, or any suspicion of abuse occurring to a vulnerable population such as children, the elderly, the disabled etc.  Our primary goal is to maintain your personal safety as well as the safety of others, and in the event that we believe confidentiality must be breached, we will make every attempt to discuss this with you prior to doing so.

How much do counseling services cost?

All services provided by the Counseling and Disability Services office are free of charge to eligible students.

When am I eligible to receive counseling services?

You must be registered for classes in the current semester in order to receive personal, academic or career counseling services.  If you have registered for the following semester and have completed the immediate preceding semester with EGSC, you may receive services between the semester breaks.  This includes students who have not registered for summer courses, but were registered in spring and have already registered for fall.   If you withdraw from all classes at any point in the semester, you will no longer be eligible for our services.  If you are a new or returning student, you must have begun classes prior to receiving services.

How can I set up an appointment for counseling?

You can initiate contact with the counselors through email, phone or by coming to our office.  We will ask you a few questions about what services you are interested in and get a basic idea of your concerns.  We strongly encourage appointments for counseling so that we can ensure we have adequate time to devote to your needs.  Additionally, at this time we have one counselor at each office, so appointments are first come, first served.  You may drop in, but at times we will not be able to meet with you immediately, as we may be serving other students.

How do I apply to live on campus?

You can print an application by visiting our website at www.ega.edu/index.php/offices/student_affairs/housing.

Roommates are assigned based on information provided on the Residence Hall Application and input from the student. On the application, students can request roommates by name. They also complete a section about hobbies/preferences that helps us match them. If four people do not request each other by name, they will be sent contact information for every applicant that they match. It will be up to them to contact potential roommates and contact the Office of Housing and Residence Life to update their preferences. Any spots available after July 5 will be assigned by the Office of Housing and Residence Life.

Can you change roommates after they have been assigned?

How can I be notified of campus emergencies (such as campus closings due to bad weather)?

In the event of a campus emergency that may occur at either the main campus or at EGSC – Statesboro, the college utilizes the ConnectED Emergency Notification System to alert students, faculty & staff via email and telephone.  You can also receive alerts via text message on your cellular phone.  For more information, please click here.

Only drinks / beverages in containers with lids, caps, or covers may be consumed in computer labs and computer classrooms.  Food items & tobacco products and other similar-type products are not allowed in the computer labs / computer classrooms under any circumstances because they have the potential for damaging the equipment in the computer labs and can create unsanitary conditions. While using an EGSC student computer lab or computer classroom, users may use cellular telephones and other similar communication devices for texting only.  Because it can be disturbing to others, cell phone conversations should occur outside of student computer labs and computer classrooms. The computer labs are for students, faculty, and staff use only.  Please do not bring small children in the computer labs as doing so may disturb others.  A college ID is needed to enter and use the student computer labs. You must present your EGSC Student ID when entering the labs.

What can I expect from personal counseling?

Personal counseling is a collaborative process between the counselor and the student aimed at focusing on specific goals you have set.   Common goals include reducing anxiety/depression, improving relationships, improving self-esteem and overcoming a traumatic experience.  Sessions are generally 50 minutes and can be scheduled weekly, bi-weekly or at other intervals as mutually decided on.  Personal counseling is not a “magic wand” and the counselor cannot reach your goals for you, however, we can help guide you in the direction to do so successfully.  It is an active process that will take work on your part both in and outside of sessions, and we are willing to help you do this!

Are there any limits to concerns I can bring to personal counseling sessions?

While we do our best to meet your needs and often deal with severe and on-going concerns, some issues may exceed the scope of what our counselors are qualified to address.  Additionally, your needs may exceed the services that we can provide in our counseling center at this time.  We will discuss this with you and provide referral information for clinicians in the community who may be better suited to meet your needs.  Some examples of needs that may exceed our qualifications/services include: chronically suicidal/homicidal/psychotic students, students suffering from severe psychiatric diagnoses beyond the scope of our training, students presenting with a primary diagnosis of substance dependence, and students whose presenting concerns pose ethical conflicts (ex. Roommates seeking individual counseling to talk about one another, family members seeking individual counseling to talk about one another etc.).

Often we can work with students in conjunction with their medical doctors/other treating clinicians, so please be sure to contact us to discuss suitability for services before assuming we cannot help you.

Can I have medications prescribed through the Counseling Center?

One limitation to our counseling center is that we do not have medical doctors on staff, so we will not be able to provide any medication management services.  Please speak with us about referrals to physicians who can prescribe medications, including those who operate on a sliding fee scale and accept patients without insurance.

Can I have medications prescribed through Health Services?

For students in Statesboro

You may utilize Health Services at Georgia Southern, however, they will not provide NEW prescriptions to students who are not currently receiving medication management from their home physician.  If you ARE currently receiving medication from your home physician, contact GSU Health Services to discuss transferring your records.  If documentation can be provided directly from your treating physician, Health Services will often refill prescriptions during the times you may not be able to visit your physician to receive refills.  Statesboro students CANNOT receive any services from Georgia Southern’s Counseling and Career Development Center.  This includes personal counseling, crisis intervention, and/or psychiatric services.

For Students in Swainsboro:

Please contact Health Services in Swainsboro to discuss ability to prescribe psychiatric medications.  They can be reached at: (478) 289-2182

Parking and Transportation

Violent or Criminal Behavior

Public Safety provides 24 hour assistance.  In the event actual or potential violent, hostile or criminal behavior is witnessed, immediately contact Public Safety 455-0125 or 289-2090.

  1. Leave the immediate area whenever possible and direct others to do so,
  2. If the offender has weapons or is suspected of having weapons, take cover immediately using all available concealment.  Close and lock doors when possible to separate yourself and others from any armed offender.

Snow, Ice, Flooding

Snow, ice or flooding can make travel to and from campus hazardous.  When the potential or conditions develop that would make travel to and from the campus hazardous, the following steps will be followed:

  1. Public Safety will monitor the National Weather Service broadcasts, local reports; contact the Department of Transportation Road Condition Office. Upon receipt of information that would or has the potential to make travel hazardous, the on duty security office will notify the Chief of Public Safety.
  2. The Chief will contact the President and the Emergency Response Committee: Vice President for Academic Affairs, Vice President for Student and Enrollment Services, Vice President for Business and Finance, Special Assistant to President and Legal Counsel, Director of Facilities, and Vice President for Information Technology Services.
  3. The President and Emergency Response Committee will determine if the College operations are to be suspended.  If they are to be suspended the remainder of the Senior Staff Council will be notified.
  4. The President and Emergency Response Committee will direct the Senior Staff Council to  initiate College notifications, news releases, modify the College information line recording, etc.
  5. Public Safety will initiate steps to secure the College facilities and grounds, preventing entry to the campus under hazardous conditions.  Public Safety will continue to monitor the weather conditions and campus conditions and periodically update the Emergency Response Committee.

NOTE:  College employees should monitor their local media stations for information as to the suspension of College operations.  Information will be provided to local news media as soon as it is determined that the College operations will be suspended.

Severe Weather Emergency Tornado, Severe Lightning Preparedness

Monitoring: Public Safety will monitor the National Weather Service radio and other weather information outlets for notification of potential severe weather reports for the immediate area:

Tornado/Thunderstorm/Wind WATCH – indicates that atmospheric conditions are conducive for the development of the stated warning.  Normal operations will continue.  Employees should monitor weather conditions closely and be prepared to act without warning if necessary.

Tornado/Thunderstorm/Wind WARNING – indicates that the hazardous condition stated has been spotted or identified on radar.  When these conditions immediately threaten the campus, the Public Safety will issue notification via Connect Ed, fax, posters, messages, text and telephone communications to the campus and/or utilize a Public Address System located within buildings and on police vehicles when necessary.

NOTE:  Weather conditions can deteriorate rapidly, without warning; therefore, everyone should maintain a close watch on weather conditions via Internet, radio, and/or through personal observation.  Individuals need to be prepared to act without notification when severe weather is experienced.

NOTE:  In the event an employee feels that weather is immediately threatening they will initiate the following actions:

Take Cover – Instruct students, employees and others in the immediate area to move to the designated severe weather shelter areas*, time permitting, or find a wall near the interior of the building away from windows and exterior doors.  Individuals will curl up in a ‘ball’ or fetal position near the wall, place their hands over their head and remain in the position until severe weather passes.

*The following symbol prominently displayed on doors will indicate Designated Severe Weather Rooms:

Designated Severe Weather Room Symbol

DO NOT LEAVE THE BUILDING OR INITIATE A BUILDING EVACUATION DURING THESE CIRCUMSTANCES.  When severe weather strikes, power may be disrupted causing alarms to sound.  If fire is not immediately present and a clear exit is maintained, everyone should remain until the weather passes.

  • ACADEMIC BUILDING: Lower Level Student Clinic Area, Upper Level Restrooms, Social Science Conference Room
  • STUDENT CENTER: Room 112, Meeting Room 3, Faculty/Staff Breakroom, Student Meeting Rooms 1 and 2, Restrooms, Vault, Mailroom, Admissions Conference Room
  • GYMNASIUM: Locker Rooms, Restrooms, Inner hallway old wing
  • GEORGE L. SMITH BUILDING: Inner hallway, Restrooms, Vault
  • LUCK GAMBRELL CENTER: J-531, J528, Library Storage Area, Restrooms, VP Academic Affairs File Room
  • PLANT OPERATIONS: Breakroom, Restrooms
  • COMMUNITY LEARNING CENTER: Storage Area, Hallways
  • BOBCAT VILLAS: Interior hallways on first level of residential wings

The important thing is to move away from areas that have large expanses of windows, since these could become deadly missiles in the event of a tornado. Also, if you are in small inner room such as the restrooms or filing rooms, there will be more wall support around you. Everyone should remain in a safe area until the all clear is given.

Hostage Situation

If taken hostage, or you witness another person being taken hostage or contained in a specific area:

  • Do your best to appear as calm as possible. Avoid drastic action.
  • The initial 45 minutes are often the most dangerous.  Follow instructions, be alert, and stay alive.  Captors are emotionally disturbed and it is difficult to predict their response to a given situation.
  • Don’t speak unless spoken to and then only when necessary.  Don’t talk down or attempt to rationalize with the captor.
  • Avoid appearing hostile.
  • Maintain eye contact with the captor at all times if possible, but do not stare.
  • Do not make quick or sudden moves.  If you must go to the bathroom, need medications, or first aid, ask your captors.
  • Be observant and try to remember as many details about your captors as possible.  In the event you are released or escape, the personal safety of others may depend on what you remember about the situation.
  • Displaying some fear may work to your advantage.
  • Be prepared for evasive action in the event entry by police is made.  Often they will shout instructions.  Follow them immediately.

Flu Pandemic/Infectious Disease

In the event of an influenza or infectious disease pandemic, colleges and universities will play an integral role in protecting the health and safety of students, employees and their families. East Georgia College's Pandemic and Infectious Disease Response Plan follows the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) framework specifically designed to assist colleges and universities to prepare for and respond to an influenza and infectious disease pandemic. The plan aligns college response with the World Health Organization (WHO) incident threat levels.

EGC Pandemic and Infectious Disease Coordinator: Dr. Jack H. Austin, Jr., Board certified in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases, University Hospital, Augusta, Georgia will monitor CDC warnings, maintain official tally of reported and suspected cases, and establish protocol and homecare for pandemic and infectious disease cases on EGC campus including on-campus housing.

EGC Chief of Public Safety in coordination with EGC Student Health Clinic Medical practitioner will tally reported and suspected cases and maintain frequent contact with EGC Pandemic and Infectious Disease Coordinator Dr. Jack Austin, Emanuel County Health Department, 911 and USG Safety and Security.

EGC Infectious Disease Coordinator:
Dr. Jimmy Wedincamp  (478) 289-2143

These steps may help prevent the spread of respiratory illnesses such as the flu:

  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze and throw the tissue away immediately after use in a designated trash receptacle.
  • Wash hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. If you are not near water, use an alcohol-based (60-95%) hand cleaner.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick. If you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too.
  • If you get the flu or suspect that you have the flu, stay home from work.  This will help prevent others from catching your illness.

To avoid spreading germs, try not to touch your eyes, nose, or mouth.

Communication During Outbreak

  • Employees should maintain contact with their immediate supervisors for essential information.
  • General information pertaining to college operations will be posted on the EGC website, broadcast on the local and regional radio and television stations.
  • Sick leave should be reported to Human Resources.
  • Refer students to Vice President of Student and Enrollment Services or Vice President for Academic Affairs for information on continuity of instruction. EGC will follow CDC recommendations which include restricting travel to and from affected domestic and international areas, recalling nonessential employees working in or near an affected area when an outbreak begins, and distributing health information to persons who are returning from affected areas.

Fire

All incidents of unintentional/non control burn fires will be reported to the Public Safety immediately whether Fire Department response is required or not.  All department heads, supervisors, etc., will ensure that their employees are aware of the location of fire extinguishers and fire alarm pull boxes in their work areas.   All employees shall be made aware of emergency evacuation routes for their work area, the location of fire exit windows, etc. Also, do not use elevators in the event of fire.  In addition, the following procedures should be reviewed with employees.

  • If a fire is reported and confirmed activate the building fire alarm and contact Public Safety  as soon as possible at 455-0125 or 289-2090 and call 911.
    • If a minor fire appears controllable, IMMEDIATELY, contact, or direct someone in the area to contact the Public Safety.  Then promptly direct the charge of the fire extinguisher toward the base of the flame and sweep the extinguisher around the burning area.
    • On large fires that do not appear controllable, IMMEDIATELY, activate the building alarm and contact, or direct someone to contact Public Safety.  Close all doors while exiting the building to reduce oxygen to the flames and slow the spread of fire.  DO NOT LOCK DOORS!
  • Assist in the evacuation of the building.  Smoke is the greatest danger in a fire, so be prepared to stay near the floor where the air will be less toxic.
  • If trapped on a second story or higher, hang an article of clothing out of the window to attract the attention of by-standers or emergency personnel.  Anyone trapped in the room should remain close to the floor to avoid smoke.
  • During the evacuation, direct crowds away from fire hydrants, roadways, and clear sidewalks immediately adjacent to the building.  Ask bystanders to assist in watching windows, doorways, etc., for persons that may be trapped inside.  DO NOT ATTEMPT TO RESCUE! NOTIFY EMERGENCY SERVICES PERSONNEL ON THE SCENE.

Explosion, Aircraft Crash on or Near Campus

In the event an incident occurs involving the explosion or a downed aircraft on campus the following action will be taken:

  1. Immediately take cover under tables, desks, and other objects which will give protection against falling glass or debris that may result from secondary explosions or facility damage.
  2. Public Safety should be notified as soon as possible at 289-2090 or 455-0125 cell.
  3. If necessary, or when directed to do so, activate the building fire alarm.  CAUTION:  THE BUILDING ALARM RINGS ONLY LOCALLY INSIDE THE BUILDING – YOU MUST REPORT THE EMERGENCY TO THE PUBLIC SAFETY AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.
  4. Assist the handicapped in exiting the building.  Do not use the elevators in case of fire.
  5. Once outside, move to a clear area that is at least 500 feet away from the affected area.  Keep streets and walkways clear for emergency vehicles and crews. Know your assembly points.
  6. If requested, assist emergency personnel as necessary.
  7. Do not return to an affected area unless instructed to do so.  Stay clear of the emergency area and/or affected buildings to reduce the chances of interference with responding emergency personnel.
  8. A campus emergency Command Post may be set up near the disaster site. Keep clear of the Command Post unless you have official business.

Emergency Evacuation Procedures

BUILDING EVACUATION

Department heads are responsible for instructing their employees on the emergency evacuation routes for their areas.  Evacuation routes should be posted in visible areas near exits, if possible.  At the beginning of each semester, faculty should instruct students of the emergency evacuation route for their classroom room and designate an assembly point outside of the building.

  • All building evacuations will occur when an alarm sounds and/or upon notification by Public Safety, Connect Ed, Plant Operations staff or Building Representative.
  • When the building evacuation alarm is activated during an emergency, leave by the emergency evacuation route for the area in which you are located.  If the exit is blocked use the nearest marked exit and alert others to do the same.
  • Assist the handicap in exiting the building.  Do not use the elevators in case of fire and/or potential power loss.
  • Once outside, proceed to a clear area that is at least 500 feet away from affected building.  Keep streets, fire lanes, hydrant areas and walkways clear for emergency vehicles and personnel.  Identify an assembly point for your group to congregate once outside.
  • DO NOT RETURN to an evacuated building unless instructed to do so by a College official.

IMPORTANT:  After the evacuation, report to your designated assembly point.  Remain in the designated assembly point until all personnel are accounted for or until directed to return to the building.

CAMPUS AREA EVACUATION

  • Evacuation of all or part of the campus grounds will be announced by Public Safety.
  • All persons are to immediately vacate the area in question and move to another part of campus as directed.  Building Representatives are responsible for aiding handicap persons.

NOTE: Stay in the area designated until permission to return to the building is given.

Earthquake

During an earthquake, actual or caused by explosion, etc., remain calm and quickly follow the steps outlined below:

  • IF INDOORS, seek refuge in a doorway or under a desk or table.  Stay away from glass windows, shelves and heavy equipment if possible.
  • IF OUTDOORS move quickly away from buildings, utility poles, and other structures.  CAUTION:  Always avoid power or utility lines as they may be energized.
  • If in an automobile, stop in the safest place available, preferably away from power lines and trees.  Stop as quickly as safety permits, but stay in your vehicle for the shelter it offers.
  • After the initial shock, remain alert for after-shocks or subsequent explosions.  Evaluate the situation and if emergency help is necessary, call Public Safety at 455-0125 or 289-2090.
  • Damaged facilities should be reported to Plant Operations at 289-2095. Note gas leaks and power lines create specific hazards.
  • If an emergency exists, and there is NO gas leak, activate the building alarm.

CAUTION: THE BUILDING ALARM RINGS LOCALLY INSIDE THE BUILDING YOU MUST REPORT THE EMERGENCY TO THE PUBLIC SAFETY AS SOON AS POSSIBLE AT 455-0125 or 289-2090.

Civil Disturbance or Demonstration

Most campus demonstrations such as marches, meetings, picketing and/or rallies will be peaceful and non-obstructive.  Demonstrations will be conducted at the “Free Speech” areas located at the PE Building’s Front Entrance Grassed area OR at the Student Center’s Campus Green Entrance Grassed area.  In the event the “Free Speech” area is not available, alternate locations will be identified by the Chief of Public Safety in consultation with the Director of Plant Operations.  Demonstrations will not be disrupted unless one or more of the following conditions exist:

  • INTERFERENCE with normal College operations,
  • PREVENTION of access to offices, buildings, or other College facilities,
  • THREAT of physical harm to persons or damage to College grounds or facilities.

If any of these conditions exist, immediately contact Public Safety.  Public Safety will notify the President depending on the nature of the demonstration; the appropriate procedures listed below should be followed:

1. Peaceful, Non-obstructive Demonstration

  • Generally demonstrations of this kind will not be interrupted.  The demonstrations will not be obstructed or provoked and efforts should be made to continue normal College operations.
  • If demonstrators are asked to leave but refuse to leave by regular facility closing time(s):
    • Arrangements will be made by Public Safety to monitor the situation during non-business hours, OR,
    • Determination will be made to treat the violation of regular closing hours as a disruptive demonstration (see  #2).

2. Non-violent, Disruptive Demonstrations

In the event that a demonstration blocks access to College facilities or interferes with the College operations:

  • Demonstrators will be asked to terminate the disruptive activity by the Vice President of Student and Enrollment Services or the President,
  • The Vice President for Student and Enrollment Services or President will have a photographer and/ or videographer with them to document the proceedings.
  • Key College personnel and student leaders may be asked to go to the areas to persuade the demonstrators to desist.
  • The Vice President of Student and Enrollment Services or President will go to the area and ask the demonstrators to leave or to discontinue the disruptive activities.
  • If the demonstrators persist in the disruptive activity, they will be advised that failure to discontinue within a determined length of time may result in disciplinary action, including suspension or expulsion or possible intervention by Public Safety.  Except in extreme emergencies, the President will be consulted before such disciplinary actions are taken.
  • Efforts should be made to secure positive identification, including photographs, of demonstrators in violation for later testimony.
  • Public Safety will be consulted to determine the need for an injunction of civil authorities.
  • If court injunction is obtained, the demonstrators will be so informed.  Those demonstrators who refuse to comply will be warned of the intention to arrest.

3. Violent Disruptive Demonstrations

In the event that a violent demonstration, one in which injury to persons or property occurs or appears eminent, the President will be immediately notified.

a. During Regular Operational Hours

  1. The Vice President for Student and Enrollment Services and necessary Public Safety personnel will be summoned to the scene,
  2. Public Safety will ensure sufficient officers are present to contain the violent/disruptive demonstrators.  Should an insufficient number of officers be available, assistance will be requested from the Swainsboro Police Department, and Emanuel County Sheriffs Office as needed.

b. After Regular Operational Hours

  1. Public Safety should be immediately notified of the demonstration,
  2. The President will be notified and determine the following actions to be taken:
    • Notify Emergency Response Committee members,
    • Determine if the Vice President for Student and Enrollment Services shall respond to the scene.
    • Public Safety will ensure sufficient officers are present to contain the violent/disruptive demonstrators.  Should an insufficient number of officers be available, assistance will be requested from the Swainsboro Police Department, and Emanuel County Sheriffs Office as needed.

NOTE:  The Chief of Public Safety or on-duty Security officer will respond to the incident without counsel from others if an immediate response is of paramount importance to the safety and security of persons and/or property.

NOTE: The Chief of Campus Security or on-duty Security officer will respond to the incident without counsel from others if an immediate response is of paramount importance to the safety and security of persons and/or property.

Chemical or Radiation Spill

Hazardous chemicals are utilized on campus in various locations.  Also, trains, tractor trailers and other vehicles that may be traveling on or near the campus may have hazardous chemicals that could threaten the environment of the campus.

The following steps will be followed in the event of a chemical or radiation spill:

  1. Any spillage of a hazardous chemical or radioactive material will be reported to Public Safety immediately.
  2. When reporting, be specific about the material involved and approximate quantities.  Public Safety will initiate the response of appropriate hazardous material response teams to effectively clean-up the spill.
  3. The site should be evacuated immediately and sealed off to prevent further contamination of other areas.  AT NO TIME SHOULD SOMEONE RE-ENTER AN AREA THAT HAS BEEN EVACUATED.
  4. If the evacuation is required, the person on site should activate the building alarm and follow standard evacuation routes that do not cross the area where the spill is located.

Bomb Threat

In recent years, explosive devices have been detonated in various locations with and without warning.  All staff and faculty are required to report any suspicious packages or objects found on campus to the Public Safety immediately.  DO NOT HANDLE THE OBJECT. In addition, they are to report any bomb threats received via email, telephone or other means of communication.

Receipt of Bomb Threat – Anyone receiving a threat that a bomb is located on College property should attempt to obtain the following information:

  • When is the bomb going to explode?
  • Where is the bomb located?  What area?
  • Why did you place the bomb?
  • What type of bomb is it?
  • What does it look like?
  • What is your name?

Normally the caller will not answer these questions, but may make comments.  During this time, the person receiving the threat should attempt to listen for any background noises, accent of the caller, or any information that may be helpful.

  1. Keep talking to the caller as long as possible and record the following information:
    • Time of call
    • Age and sex of caller
    • Speech pattern, accent, nationality, etc.,
    • Emotional state of caller
    • The number dialed by the caller,
    • Background noise.
  2. Report the incident immediately to Public Safety, 455-0125 or 289-2090.  If possible, have someone contact the Public Safety ASAP while you are on the phone.
  3. Upon notification, the Public Safety will immediately notify the Chief of Public Safety.
  4. A decision will be made as to whether the building or area will be evacuated.
    • Evacuation Ordered: Staff and faculty will assist in the evacuation of the building by ensuring that person(s) leave the area.  Individuals evacuating the building shall move to a location that is approximately 1,500 feet away from any buildings.  Generally, the parking areas at the farthest points from the buildings are the most acceptable.
    • Evacuation Not Ordered: In the event an evacuation is not ordered, a covert search may be conducted of the area.  Employees will be asked to discreetly check their work areas for any suspicious packages or objects.
    • Bomb/Suspicious Package/Object Located: The Public Safety will order the immediate evacuation of the area and identify a telephone in the immediate area to establish an on-site communications center.  Two-way radios will not be used within 1,500 feet of the suspected device!  Communications Officers will notify Plant Operations personnel to cease use of radios.   The Public Safety will call 911.The President will be immediately contacted.
