STUDENT ASSISTANT POSITIONS

OVERVIEW

A student employee is a part-time employee who is currently enrolled in at least a half-time credit load (6 credit hours) at East Georgia College with the primary goal of achieving a degree. A student employee is considered a temporary employee and is not eligible for benefits. Student employees can perform many jobs within an office or department such as clerical support, computer lab assistant, library aide, tutors, etc.

All student workers must complete an "Application for Student Employment" and "new hire" employment paperwork and post hours in the ADP system.  

At the beginning of each semester, student employees must complete an updated "Application for Student Employment" and submit to HR with the appropriate signatures.

Student employees ineligible for financial aid are considered Student Assistants.

DEPARTMENTAL INFORMATION

All departments must post on-campus positions with the SEO and all students must apply for on-campus positions with the Student Employment Office (SEO). Students will be required to submit an application for student employment.

Departments will set up interviews with individual students. Once a hiring decision is made, a formal offer to the student chosen will be extended. Once a student accepts the position, the new student employee may begin the paperwork processing to finalize employment.

ALLOWABLE WORK HOURS

Students cannot work more than 19 hours per week or 48% time. Exceptions can be made during breaks such as Christmas, Spring break and summer. Supervisors are responsible for monitoring work activities and student abidance of employment policies and procedures. Note: Changes in student enrollment status may affect employment.

ADP PROCESS

Students must log in their time worked through the ADP system. Each department will be responsible for training new hires on the ADP system.

PAY

Student assistants will be paid no less than the federal minimum wage. Students are paid bi-weekly. Student employees are encouraged to have their paycheck directly deposited into their bank account or Higher One account to ensure timely receipt of paycheck. Paper checks may be delayed up to a minimum of one week due to payroll processing.

GENERAL RULES

  • The term of employment is on a semester basis. Students will be notified if employment will not be extended.

  • Student employees are not eligible for any employment benefits.

  • Job descriptions will be distributed to all employees. Basic training will be provided.

  • Students should adhere to the dress code, schedule and rules of conduct established by East Georgia College and the individual department in which they work.

  • Students are expected to follow job assignments in a serious and responsible manner. Supervisors should have work assignments ready to complete when student is scheduled. If no assignment is prepared then the student should be dismissed and the hours rescheduled when their assistance is required.

  • Students will be evaluated and they will also evaluate their supervisors/job experience if the student leaves the department and/or after 6 months in specified areas.

HIRING

  • Applications will only be accepted when positions are available.

  • There will be an open and close date for each job posted. All on-campus positions will be posted with the Student Employment Office (SEO) for a minimum of 5 business days.

  • Students are required to submit an employment application to be considered for on-campus positions.

  • Departmental advertising must indicate application for employment is made through the SEO.

  • Departments will process hiring paperwork and meet established Human Resources and Payroll policies and deadlines.

  • ADP records must include certification by the supervisor that the hours recorded are accurately reflecting time worked. Approval implies direct knowledge of the student having worked the hours reported.

TERMINATION/DISMISSAL

  • All students are subject to discharge at any time.

  • Failure to comply with EGC policies or inadequate performance of job duties may result in the dismissal of student employees.

  • Departments/Supervisors must submit a change of status form to SEO when the student is no longer working for the department. This may be due to withdrawal, transferring, graduation or other on-campus employment.

Counseling Office Assistant

General Job Description and Duties: Assist Director with the scheduling of appointments, answering phone calls and taking messages, directing students, parents, faculty, or staff members who walk in. Student may also assist with shredding of confidential information. Student will also assist in preparing/copying materials for the upcoming Summer and Fall Parent Orientation programs. Student must be able to maintain a very high level of confidentiality of student information and all conversations in the Counseling Office. Failure to maintain confidentiality will result in dismissal from employment. Other duties include: Proctoring student exams, ordering supplies for office, and completing time sheets and payroll related paperwork. The student must be punctual for work and assigned schedule. Complete other duties as assigned by the Director of the department. Students planning to pursue a career in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, or Sociology are preferred.

Preferred Skills: Must Possess good phone etiquette, highly organized, skilled in Microsoft Word applications such as Power Point, Publisher, and Excel. Must also be timely for work and have excellent customer service skills.

Math Science Assistant

General Job Description and Duties: Student will set up and dismantle both geology and physics laboratory exercises; clean laboratory equipment and supplies; make copies of lecture and laboratory handouts; catalog new specimens or equipment; replace used up or warn out supplies in the laboratory with new ones in the geology and physics supply room; organize, label, or rearrange laboratory specimens for students identification; catalog new and existing geology and physics movies, catalog new and existing topographic maps, type new or old lecture notes. The student is expected to assist Dr. Stracher in between classes and/or at a time mutually agreed upon by Dr. Stracher and the student. The student will be required to log in and out of ADP for each work session. The student, when working in Dr. Stracher's office in his absence, is expected to answer the phone and take messages.

Minimum Requirements: Must have the ability to use MS Word and burn data onto a CD. Dr. Stracher will teach the assistant any skills necessary to perform his or her assigned tasks.

Days/Hours to be worked: Flexible - Student must work within the regular office hours from 8AM to 6PM but there can be flexibility in the student's work schedule.

Fitness Center Assistants

General Job Description and Duties: Responsible for the overall operation of the Front Desk/Welcome Center area during facility operating hours. Position must verify membership and monitor all guests as they enter and exit the facility. Aid in the daily checkout process associated with all open recreation checkout equipment. Must report to work on time for scheduled work hours; answer phone using proper phone etiquette; complete tasks in a timely manner; maintains cleanliness of equipment; ensures a clean environment to all patrons; assists patrons with equipment; enforces Fitness Center rules and regulations. Assistant must be physically able to lift, carry, stand, bend, squat and reach.

Preferred Skills or Knowledge: Excellent customer service skills, including effective communication and positive behaviors; computer skills, leadership qualities and responsibilities, and the ability to multi-task. Assistant must have knowledge of all workout equipment, computer, and other Fitness Center equipment.

Minimum Requirements: Student must become CPR and AED trained/certified.

Days/Hours to be worked: Flexible ~ Monday-Thursday 7:00AM - 6:00PM and Friday & Saturday 8:00AM - 12:00PM

Housing: 4 Resident Assistants (RA)

General Job Description and Duties: A Resident Assistant (RA) promotes community development, assists in emergency and crisis management, enforces college and departmental policies, serves as a resource referral and role-model, and supports the day-to-day running of the residential complex. RA must support, communicate, enforce and abide by all college and departmental policies, be available and accessible to students within the residential complex. This position will serve on a rotating duty schedule; assist with day-to-day operations, including front desk coverage, lockout procedures, tours and guest hospitality. Must be available for training opportunities before, after and during the semester; assist with move-in and move-out; and support Residence Hall Council. This position will plan, promote, and provide educational and social programming opportunities for residential complex. Will have other duties assigned that are consistent with the position and college/departmental needs.

Preferred Skills and Knowledge: Training will be provided; candidates that have held leadership positions in the past are strongly encouraged to apply.

Requirements: Student must live in Residence Hall.

Human Resources Student Worker

The Office of Human Resources/Student Employment is seeking a Student Assistant or Work Study Student to assist with day to day clerical duties.

Duties include: filing, copying, typing, preparing applicant response letters, and other duties as assigned.

Student must be detailed oriented, possess excellent written and oral communication skills, basic computer skills, dependable, and must be able to maintain high confidentiality. Preference will be given to students who are majoring in business or who have worked in a confidential office setting previously.

This position reports to the Director of Human Resources.

Hours are flexible and will not exceed 19 hours per week.
