SERV 1001 - Service Learning

course designed to enhance students' education by providing opportunities to
serve the community and to develop academic skills in their chosen field of
study, with emphasis on critical evaluation of the experience.
PRE-REQUISITES: A core curriculum course. May be taken concurrently with a core

OBJECTIVES AND LINKAGES:
Objectives of the Course:
1. To give students the
opportunity to enhance traditional classroom learning by actively engaging in
experiential learning.
2. To give students the
opportunity to serve the community in ways that accent what’s being learned in
class.
3. To give students the
opportunity to directly apply what they study in meaningful volunteer
activities.

ABSENCE POLICY: Since SERV 1001 is an on-line course, attendance is not
required; rather the student will be evaluated for attendance based on the periodic
updates of progress as noted on the schedule below.

The instructor will be in his office on the
MAKE-UP WORK POLICY: The student is expected to maintain the schedule listed
below. No make-up work is allowed.
POLICY REGARDING TAPING OF CLASS:
“Students who would like to audio or videotape a class or portion of it must receive permission from the instructor. For institutional purposes, all GSAMS classes are subject to being videotaped.”
Classes may be taped for instructor use in determining attendance and participation. Each student will be required to sign a waiver for this taping.

ADDITIONAL COURSE INFORMATION:
Course Policies:
1. Service Learning should be taken in conjunction with a core course.
2. To complete SERV 1001, students must volunteer for a minimum of 20 hours during the semester for a qualifying organization or business. Students may select their own project or may be provided a contact source of service by the instructor.
3. Students must submit a proposal for service learning prior to beginning the service. This will serve as the criteria for evaluation of the completion of the service learning. The instructor must approve the proposal prior to beginning the service. See the schedule for the due date for the proposal. The proposal will consist of a Student Agreement and an Agency Confirmation. These forms can be accessed from the course homepage on WebCT-Vista.
4. A log must be kept of the activities showing time spent and activities completed. Verification by the organization or business must be included with the log.
5. Students are required to submit an update of progress via WebCT or email. Updates are due every month. Students may submit updates by one of the following methods:

A late update will receive a letter grade
reduction for each week it is late.
6. After completion of the service, the student will write a reflection paper
describing their activities and how those activities related to the core course.
7. The reflection paper and the log are due by the end of the semester. See the course schedule.

GENERAL EDUCATION LEARNING OUTCOMES:
General education at
General education consists of
forty-two semester hours spanning Areas A-E.
Included in these hours are courses in the arts, humanities,
mathematics, and natural and social sciences. These courses are designed to achieve

11. Students will apply the study and learning strategies
necessary to succeed in higher education.
12. Students will demonstrate an understanding of
different themes, subjects, styles, and cultural expressions in art, music, or
literature.
CAMPUS EMERGENCIES:
In the event the fire alarm is sounded, everyone must evacuate the building at once and in a calm and orderly fashion - DO NOT RUN - using the nearest exit. In the event of a severe weather warning, which will be delivered verbally, everyone must proceed immediately to the nearest designated shelter area which are marked by a small tornado symbol. All severe weather shelter locations are posted on the EGC website. Each student should, on the first day of class, determine the location of the nearest exit and the nearest designated shelter area for each of his or her classrooms. If you have difficulty locating either ask you instructor to assist you.
