Bio

Roger C. Byrd is a part-time instructor in the Division of Social Sciences.

Dr. Byrd is an Associate Professor of Social Sciences and the Director of Prison Programs at Brewton-Parker College in Mount Vernon, Georgia. He currently serves on the board of directors of the Georgia Civic Affairs Foundation. Mr. Byrd is also a Senior Fellow with the Philemon Institute.

Prior to his career in education, Dr. Byrd was a member of the Georgia House of Representatives from 1981 until 2002. During his tenure he chaired the standing committees of Human Relations and Aging and Intra-governmental Coordination. He subsequently served as the Chief of Staff for the Speaker of the Georgia House and as a member of the board of trustees of the Georgia Road and Tollway Authority.
Dr. Byrd’s book, “Sisyphus No More; The Case for Prison Education”, was published in 2020 by Rowman and Littlefield.
