Accommodations for Students with Disabilities

Disability Services Manual

East Georgia College provides reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities to ensure that they enjoy equal opportunity to participate in and benefit from programs available at the college.

To receive accommodations, complete the following steps:

  • Meet with your Disability Services Counselor (in the Student Center - Room B150) and discuss your concerns and issues with the counselor.

  • Together, you and the counselor will assess your eligibility for accommodations and complete an application.

  • Applications will be forwarded to the Regents Center for Learning Disorders (RCLD) for final approval of university accommodations as a student if necessary..

  • After the RCLD review, meet with your counselor to review the results of the RCLD assessment and discuss with your counselor a plan to help you succeed as a student. If you receive accommodations, the counselor will provide you with copies of your accommodations to distribute to your teachers.

The college is not responsible for making accommodations for students who have not disclosed their disability and have not provided appropriate documentation. Accommodations cannot be provided if it fundamentally alters the nature of the course or would cause undue hardship to the college.

PLEASE READ:

Students should begin the process of applying for accommodations approximately six months prior to classes beginning. This is necessary for the Regents Center for Learning D/Os to process high numbers of applicants from a large regional area.

Accommodations must be approved by the RCLD University System of Georgia, Board of Regents and adequate notice must be given to the Disability Service Provider to allow preparation for the approved accommodations. Examples are: books on tape, special furniture or in-classroom adjustments, note takers, etc. Adequate preparation time is six weeks.

Note Takers: Students must identify the auxiliary aids they want and disclose those needs at least two weeks before their courses in question begin. Each new semester or registration period requires the student to request their needs. Note takers should meet "good academic standing" status and have met with the disability provider to complete training and expectations of note taking. If note takers are not available on campus through the Disability Office, The Disability Service Provider will assist you in communicating your needs to the instructor of such courses in order to help you find a note taker. Recorders should be used in the classroom to replace note takers when necessary.

All accommodations must be reissued each semester by contacting the Disability Office and requesting those accommodations for each new course.

Students having problems receiving granted accommodations (problem with instructor) should contact the Disability Service Provider to discuss and help solve those issues.
