East Georgia State College’s annual Works in Progress Reader’s Theatre Production will be held Thursday, April 23, 2020 at 8 p.m. at EGSC-Statesboro. Directed by Professor Sebastian Verdis, this production is presented by the EGSC Performing Arts Club.
Works in Progress is an innovative and creative Reader’s Theatre project developed by Sebastian Verdis in 1984 in Baltimore to showcase the talent and creativity of local actors and playwrights. One of the goals of the production is to capture the talent, imagination, and creativity of students.
Student, faculty and community playwrights are encouraged to submit their one-act play to Professor Verdis, who along with a committee, selects the best submission, informs the playwrights, and holds auditions. Auditions are open to EGSC students and faculty, as well as, the community. The cast is then selected and given a copy of the script, to which they apply the methods and techniques of Readers Theatre, including script and character analysis. Through the rehearsal process, the cast helps to develop the plays and their characters. There are usually no more than six rehearsals lasting sixty minutes each, during which lines are memorized.
Immediately following the production, the playwrights are invited to share their reaction to the performance of their work during a question-and-answer session with the audience, cast, and director. The entire process allows everyone to be involved in the process of developing a new work.
Tickets for this year’s performance are $5.00 and can be purchased online or at the door the evening of the performance.
