Statement by East Georgia State College President

The recent killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota, is the latest in a series of deeply troubling events which have focused the attention of our nation on racism which has plagued our nation for centuries. As president of a college whose student body is proudly almost one-half Black, I am writing today to express my personal outrage and deep sadness over this latest evidence of continuing, unacceptable racist acts in our nation.

I know that a mere statement by a college president cannot ease the pain of Black members of our college community who have suffered from this racism. However, it is my responsibility to acknowledge that pain and to pledge today that I will assure that East Georgia State College will not tolerate acts of racism in our community.

I know, also, that a mere pledge does not fulfill my responsibility to you. As one small first step towards fulfillment of that responsibility, I ask that you invite me to your classes and meetings this fall so that I can listen to you. Also, I will convene the student body early in the 2020-2021 academic year to listen to your input about concrete steps the college may take to be a part of the solution.
