On December 17, 2018, Swainsboro Middle School hosted a Santa, Savings, and STEM Family Night in the cafeteria. This was a collaborative project sponsored by Magnolia Midlands GYSTC, located at East Georgia State College, and Queensborough Bank and Trust of Swainsboro.
Families enjoyed participating in hands on STEM activities with a Christmas theme sponsored by MMGYSTC. Next, families enjoyed cookies and milk sponsored by Queensborough Bank and Trust while listening to a presentation on savings by a representative from Queensborough Bank and Trust of Statesboro. Afterwards, an ugly sweater contest was held, raffle prizes were dispersed, and prizes for completing activities were presented. A special appearance by Santa made the evening even more special!
“It was such an exciting event! I always get excited seeing students and parents having fun while learning!" said Erin Youmans, Regional Coordinator of MMGYSTC. "Having all the STEM activities themed around Christmas really made for a special night!"
SMS science teacher Deanna Ryan added, “I loved being with our SMS families and friends as we gathered to play games, take selfies with Santa and listen to Christmas music. The STEM activities from Magnolia Midlands involved creating closed circuits by making light-up Christmas cards and creating patterns with binary numbers by making bracelets. These activities were interesting and challenging enough that older and younger kids alike were engaged. Many of the ugly Christmas sweaters students wore were homemade and showed lots of creativity and spirit. Parents were able to learn more about starting college saving’s accounts for their children from the Queensborough Bank representative. It was really a great night for fun, food and learning. I’m so thankful for the SMS staff who worked an extra long day to help make this happen and the folks from Magnolia Midlands GYSTC and Queensborough Bank for their generosity and hard work in making the event happen!”
