On October 1 and 2, 2016, East Georgia State College hosted the 11th Annual Georgia Collegiate Disc Golf Open at the Piney Woods Disc Golf Course on the Swainsboro campus. Teams from Kennesaw State University, Georgia Southern University and East Georgia State College competed for a slot at the National Disc Golf Tournament.
The tournament was a close contest between Kennesaw and Georgia Southern, with GSU leading by five throws after round one, two after round two, and KSU edging GSU by two after the doubles round, carding a 48 to GSU’s 52.
Kennesaw State’s team finished first, securing a berth in the 2017 National Collegiate Disc Golf Championship. GSU finished second, and EGSC’s team took third.
GSU’s Levi Proctor had the lowest singles score, with his first round two-under 53 the only subpar singles score on the technically-demanding course.
The members of KSU’s team were Kevin Donahue, Matt Allen, Stephen Galloway and John Ferguson. GSU’s team was Jeb Lavender, Levi Proctor, Nathaniel Kurth and Dylan Royal. EGSC’s team members were Rebecca Meeks, Dylan Toole, Hannon Shepard, Cody Bowen and Anna Holland.
The Georgia Collegiate Disc Golf Open was sponsored by EGSC, Innova and Zanfel. The tournament was directed by EGSC professor of English Dr. Alan Brasher and EGSC professor of social sciences Dr. Walt Mason, with assistance from EGSC Director of Student Life Vicki Sherrod and Dean of the School of Social Sciences Dr. Lee Cheek.
