East Georgia State College will hold their 2016 Academic Convocation for the campus and community on Thursday, Sept. 22, 2016 at 11 a.m. in the auditorium of the Luck Flanders Gambrell Building. This year, convocation goes hand in hand with the events of the NEA Big Read and will feature Dr. Marcia Gaudet.
Dr. Gaudet is Professor of English Emerita at University of Louisiana at Lafayette. She was the Doris Meriwether/Board of Regents Endowed Professor of English, a UL Lafayette Foundation Distinguished Professor, and Founding Director of the Ernest J. Gaines Center. She has published widely on Louisiana culture, folklore, and literature. Her publications include Porch Talk with Ernest Gaines: Conversations on the Writer's Craft (1990) and This Louisiana Thing That Drives Me: The Legacy of Ernest J. Gaines (2009). She was a Visiting Scholar at the 2016 NEH Summer Institute "Ernest J. Gaines and the Southern Experience." Her book Carville: Remembering Leprosy in America was awarded the 2005 Chicago Folklore Prize. Her other book publications include Tales From the Levee; Mardi Gras, Gumbo and Zydeco; and Second Line Rescue: Improvised Responses to Katrina and Rita. She is a Fellow of the American Folklore Society.
