Bobcats fall in scrimmage against GSU

The East Georgia State College Softball team played a scrimmage game Friday at Georgia Southern University, and the Lady Bobcats Softball team went ready to play.

The Bobcats and Eagles were tied at zero to zero through 10 innings of play, before the Bobcats and Eagles both got on the board in the 11th inning, making the score two to two through 11 innings.

The Bobcats got on the scoreboard when shortstop Casey Sims doubled off the left field wall, followed by Stephanie Ruffin, who followed Sims with a double of her own off the right field fence.  Alana Lee would sacrifice to score Ruffin.

The Eagles would match the Bobcats with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. Both teams headed into the 12th inning of the scrimmage game tied.

The Bobcats were not able to get any runs in the top of the 12th inning. A lead-off double, followed by a single by the Eagles in the bottom of the 12th inning would end the Bobcats bid to knockoff the D1 Eagles in the fall scrimmage. The Bobcats fell three to two to the Eagles.

"We played our hearts out, and our Lady Bobcats played with a lot of heart and passion in this scrimmage,” said Head Coach Chuck Wimberly after the game. “Even in defeat we know that we played to the best of our ability and played with a D1 program, that year in and year out are very successful. For us, this was a great measuring tool for how good we can be and how bright our spring season can be."

Wimberly praised his freshman pitchers, Madison Bussell and Payten Strickland, who held the Eagles scoreless through 10 innings of play.

"Coach Jennings has done a really good job with our pitchers this fall, and their hard work truly shined," said Wimberly.

Defensively the Bobcats made plays all over the field with Haley Taylor, Taylor Morgan, Alana Lee, Jana Crews and Olivia Christian, all making key defensive stops for the Bobcats.

The team’s next scrimmage will be Sunday, October 27 at home against Thomas University.  Game times are set for 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
