Big Brother is watching you

George Orwell’s novel 1984 may not have been on everyone’s reading list, but the cultural impact of the book, published in 1949, reaches all of us today and in the future. The phrase “Big Brother is watching you” is part of the common lexicon, whether people have read the novel from which it is taken or not.
On September 24, 2015 from 11 a.m. until noon, East Georgia State College will host their 2015 Academic Convocation for the campus and community. This year’s theme is 1984, and the guest speaker will be Dr. John Rodden, who will join the audience via Skype from Germany. Dr. Rodden’s career began with The Politics of Literary Reputation: The Making and Claiming of ‘St. George’ Orwell, a study of the literary agency of George Orwell published with Oxford UP in 1989. He has, since then, published extensively on Orwell, and has become known as the leading scholar of George Orwell’s work in the world today. Introducing Dr. Rodden will be EGSC’s own Dr. Paul Fox, Assistant Professor of English at the Swainsboro campus.
Leading up to the event, there will be numerous tie-in events. On Monday, Sept. 21, the Art Gallery at EGSC opened a new show featuring works inspired by 1984. Following the opening of the new exhibit, a lecture was given by Dr. H. Lee Cheek as part of the Banned Books Lecture Series. His topic was 1984: A Social and Political Perspective. On Tuesday, there will be a second Banned Book Lecture given by Dr. C. Palumbo speaking on the topic 1984: A Literary and Biographical Perspective. Held in EGSC Library Room J503, the lecture will begin at 4 p.m.
Don’t miss out on any of these exciting events!
