#GivingTuesday was founded in 2012 by New York’s 92nd Street Y, in partnership with the United Nations Foundation. The goal of #GivingTuesday is to create a global day of giving back that celebrates generosity and kindness. The day itself falls on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving each year, meaning #GivingTuesday for 2015 falls on December 1.
In the same way that Black Friday and Cyber Monday kick of the buying season, #GivingTuesday kicks off the giving season. It’s a day to step back from the commercialization and consumerism that comes with the holiday season, and promote doing good for others.
If you are part of any non-profit, let your donors know that you are participating in #GivingTuesday. Make it a day to celebrate what your non-profit is able to accomplish because of your donors. Possibly choose a special need for all donations made on December 1. Encourage your donors to donate and post it on your social media pages, using #GivingTuesday as the indicator of what they are doing. Keep up with your giving totals on that day and use it as a benchmark for the future.
As an individual, use this day to recognize the needs of the non-profit. The smallest gifts make the biggest difference. Give in honor or in memory of someone. That person that you can’t ever decide what to buy for would really appreciate a gift in their honor to their favorite non-profit. Use the hashtag #GivingTuesday on social media to encourage others to do the same.
Why is East Georgia State College involved? We have a day for giving thanks. We have two for getting deals. Now, we have #GivingTuesday, a global day dedicated to giving back. On Tuesday, December 1, 2015, charities, families, businesses, community centers, and students around the world will come together for one common purpose: to celebrate generosity and to give. It’s a simple idea. Just find a way for your family, your community, your company or your organization to come together to give something more. Then tell everyone you can about how you are giving. Join us and be a part of a global celebration of a new tradition of generosity. Make a difference with #GivingTuesday.
