Tree dedication held at EGSC

East Georgia State College hosted a tree dedication December 9 to honor a long-time employee of the college. Sonya Kirkland was honored with the planting of a Shumard Oak tree near Ezra Pond at EGSC.

Kirkland began working part time at EGSC in January 2008, first in human resources and then in the business office.  Within six months, former Math-Science Chairman Bob Brown persuaded her to work full time with Math-Science as an administrative assistant. She worked with the department until her retirement in 2018. Kirkland decided to come back to EGSC to work part time which she is currently still doing. She not only knows the history and the ins and outs of the college, but she also is valuable to the college helping train other administrative assistants.

Robert Seamans, Jr., Community Forester with the Georgia Forestry Commission, presented a tree planting demonstration to the group in attendance. Seamans showed the group how to properly plant a tree and care for it as it grows.

EGSC is thankful for Sonya Kirkland and her dedication to the college over the years. EGSC would also like to thank Robert Seamans for his expert advice and demonstration at the event.
