East Georgia State College takes great pleasure in announcing that its newest bachelor’s degree program, the Bachelor of Arts Degree in Fire and Emergency Services Administration, has been nationally recognized by the Fire and Emergency Service Higher Education (FESHE) Initiative at the National Fire Academy, a division of the United States Fire Administration. East Georgia State College is the only college in Georgia that has achieved this high honor.
According to Dr. Lee Cheek, EGSC’s Dean of the School of Social Sciences, “FESHE recognition of our outstanding new program affirms the current and future contribution of our students to the world of fire and emergency services, as well as our strong institutional commitment to help advance and improve public service in Georgia and in the country.”
The Fire and Emergency Services Higher Education (FESHE) Recognition certificate is an acknowledgement that a collegiate emergency services degree program meets the minimum standards of excellence established by FESHE professional development committees and the National Fire Academy (NFA).
FESHE’s mission is to “establish an organization of post-secondary institutions to promote higher education and to enhance the recognition of the fire and emergency services as a profession to reduce loss of life and property from fire and other hazards.”
As illustrated by this recognition, the Fire and Emergency Services Administration Program at East Georgia State College has demonstrated a commitment to the nationally-recognized FESHE model of standardized professional development education criteria. FESHE concentrates on degree programs that emphasize firefighting response, fire prevention, fire administration and Emergency Medical Services management. East Georgia State College’s program also embraces other public safety fields such as emergency management and homeland security.
In June of 2014, East Georgia State College, a formal proposal was sent to University System of Georgia for a new degree program at East Georgia State College entitled Bachelor of Arts in Fire and Emergency Service Administration (FESA). EGSC saw a need for this degree, as no other college in Georgia offered a higher level degree and students were having to attend out of state facilities to receive this education. At its October 2014 meeting, the USG Board of Regents approved the College’s proposal to offer a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Fire and Emergency Services Administration (FESA).
Classes for the program commenced in the Spring 2016 semester, with five (5) different class offerings.
In terms of professional preparation, no other bachelors program in Georgia offers such a unique combination of vital coursework in fire and emergency services administration, public management, organizational behavior, and professional development.
East Georgia State College’s program is fully on-line program in order to meet the complex demands of the schedule of emergency services and aspiring public management professionals. The College already has experienced robust interest and enrollment in this new and exciting academic program.
