EGSC professor selected to participate in Executive Leadership Institute

Dr. David Chevalier, the chair of the East Georgia State College Biology Department, was recently selected to participate in the University System of Georgia’s Executive Leadership Institute. The program selects individuals in higher education to take part in the seven-month leadership institute.

The purpose of the program is to build and sustain a culture of leadership excellence by continuously developing the talent within the University System of Georgia. The leadership institute strengthens participants by providing comprehensive executive development opportunities for upcoming leaders and by developing leadership competencies required for future success. The program also strengthens institutional relations and collaboration.

The Executive Leadership Institute exposes participants in the program to a variety of USG institutions throughout the state of Georgia to develop an appreciation of the role of executive leaders at the different institutions. During his time in the program, Dr. Chevalier will have the opportunity to learn directly from a number of distinguished leaders in higher education.

Dr. Chevalier began at East Georgia State College in 2013 after teaching at Mississippi State University. He started as an assistant professor in the Biology Department and was later named the Chair of the Biology Department, a title he still holds.

“EGSC is proud of Dr. David Chevalier’s selection to participate in this prestigious University System of Georgia leadership development program,” said EGSC President Dr. Bob Boehmer. “Dr. Chevalier’s leadership of the college’s growing biology department, his service as interim dean, and his central role in bringing a chapter of the national biology honor society – Beta Beta Beta – to our college are just a few examples of the many ways in which his leadership has already moved the college forward. His participation in the Executive Leadership Institute is a well-deserved recognition of what he has accomplished already and will enable him to make even greater contributions in the future.”

Dr. Chevalier received his Bachelor of Science in plant biology and physiology at the University of Tours in France and his master’s in plant biology from the University of Montpellier. He then got his Ph.D. in Botany from the University of Zurich in Switzerland.

While at EGSC, Dr. Chevalier has received the Math and Science Distinguished Faculty of the Year Award and has completed the EGSC Staff Leadership Development program. He is also a reviewer for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools-Commission on Colleges, the program director of the EGSC Bachelor of Sciences in Biology Program, and the EGSC representative to the USG Biological Academic Advisory Committee.

   Congratulations, Dr. David Chevalier!
