EGSC hosts Virtual Spring Commencement Ceremony

East Georgia State College held their Spring Commencement Ceremony virtually on Friday, May 8, 2020 at 6 p.m. The college was unable to hold the ceremony in person due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Candidates for the 2020 Spring Graduation had the option to participate in the virtual graduation, and they have been asked to come back in the Fall to take part in the Fall Commencement Ceremony.

For the virtual ceremony, the graduating candidates were asked to provide photos of themselves to be included in the video when their name was called. The ceremony also featured special messages from student and guest speakers who were scheduled to speak at the graduation. The president of EGSC, Dr. Bob Boehmer, welcomed all viewers to the virtual ceremony.

“The COVID-19 pandemic prevents us from sharing this special event with you in person,” said Dr. Boehmer.  “We trust, however, that this virtual celebration will clearly and unequivocally convey to you how important each one of these Spring 2020 graduates is to us, how much we respect their achievements and how much admiration we have for their family and friends for the support provided over the course of a lifetime.”

He continued by congratulating the graduates on their hard work. “Graduates, as this ceremony begins, please remember that few days as special as this take place in one’s lifetime. As we begin this momentous ceremony, breathe and enjoy this moment you have earned. Quickly recall a special learning moment at East Georgia State College, smile and commit that moment to memory. Silently commit to say ‘thank you’ today to all those who helped you achieve your dreams.”

Dr. Boehmer’s welcome was followed by Morgan Bryant and Megan Bryant, who performed God Bless America. The reflection was given by graduating student Susanna Hall. The alumni speaker for the ceremony was Deion Craig. He spoke to graduates about this different, but special time in their life.

“You guys are a different group of graduates. You guys have been through something not a lot of people have been through in the past four to five, six, seven, eight years and I think that is something to be said. You guys have a different level of perseverance and just will to get this done. I just want you all to realize that and how special you are,” said Craig.

The student speaker for the ceremony was Bruce Bass, Jr. Col. George Fredrick delivered special congratulatory remarks to the students followed by Dr. Sandra Sharman, the Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs, who presented the degrees to the graduating students.

The full list of graduates will be available at a later date. The ceremony can be viewed on the EGSC website at
