Charles Wimberly will be taking on the duties of head softball coach at East Georgia State College. He will be taking on these new duties in addition to his current role as athletic director, which he has held for four years.
Wimberly is no stranger to East Georgia State College. He received his Associate Degree of Arts from EGSC. He then went on to study at Georgia Southern University, where he got his Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice. Wimberly got his Master’s in Public Administration from Troy State University.
Wimberly has had a long career in sports, which began over 25 years ago. He started his career as an assistant football coach in Woodbury, Ga. He then moved on to Piedmont Academy, where he held the roles of assistant headmaster, athletic director and head football, basketball and baseball coach for four years. He then moved and held multiple roles at Thomas Jefferson Academy and Monroe Academy as head of school, athletic director, head football coach, and head baseball coach.
“Coach Wimberly is one of the best coaches in the state. No matter the sport, he gets his players to play with passion for the game and for each other,” said Lt. Colonel Matthew Griffin of the United States Air Force, and former baseball and football player for Wimberly.
During his time coaching, his teams have had nine state football championship appearances, three of those they won, and he was named State Football Coach of the Year three times. He was also named State Baseball Coach of the Year in 2005 with over 200 wins in his career.
Wimberly has coached travel softball teams and recreation teams for over 15 years, most recently having his team play in back to back State GRPA Championships in 2018 and 2019.
“As Athletic Director, Coach Wimberly has led East Georgia State College’s athletics program for the last four years as it has grown competitively and as more and more of our athletes have succeeded academically, graduated and moved on to athletic and academic success at the next level,” said EGSC President Dr. Bob Boehmer. “Coach Wimberly will continue in that critical role as AD while assuming duties as head coach for our highly successful softball team. This is great news for the college and the student athletes. Coach Wimberly is an outstanding coach with a long record of athletic success. Even more importantly, he cares deeply about the success of each student athlete in life. Under his leadership as athletic director, our overall athletic program will continue to excel and, as head coach, our softball team will continue to complete for championships.”
