East Georgia State College will celebrate Fall Commencement 2014 on Saturday, December 13, in the EGSC Gymnasium of the Physical Education Center. The commencement ceremony begins at 10 a.m. Approximately 104 candidates will graduate fall semester.
Presiding over the ceremony will be EGSC President Bob Boehmer. The commencement speaker will be Larry J. “Butch” Parrish of the Georgia House of Representatives.
Born and raised in Swainsboro, Representative Parrish graduated from Swainsboro High School.
He attended the University of Georgia and was president of his senior class in Pharmacy School. He graduated in 1964 with a B.S. degree in Pharmacy and began practicing pharmacy in Swainsboro in 1965.
Parrish is the past president of the Swainsboro Exchange Club and the Swainsboro/Emanuel County Chamber of Commerce and served three terms as a member of the Swainsboro City Council.
In 1977, he was chosen as one of the Five Outstanding Young Men in Georgia by the Georgia Jaycees. That same year he was selected for the Pharmacist of the Year Award by Phi Delta Chi Pharmaceutical Fraternity at the University of Georgia.
The University Of Georgia College Of Pharmacy has awarded Butch the Distinguished Alumni Award and he has received the Wyeth Ayerst Pharmacy Community Service Award.
A member of the First Methodist Church of Swainsboro and church’s administrative board, Representative Parrish served two terms as a board member of the Georgia Department of Community Affairs and served one year as its chairman.
A Lifetime Honorary Member of the Georgia Sheriffs’ Association, he has been named Family Medicine Legislative Champion by the Georgia Academy of Family Physicians and Legislator of the Year by the Georgia Rural Health Association, the Georgia Public Health Association and the Georgia Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
