Dr. Bob Brown Appointed Dean of Mathematics and Science at EGSC

At the 2014 Annual Fall Faculty Workshop on August 4-6 at East Georgia State College, President Robert Boehmer announced the appointment of Dr. Bob Brown, from Chairman of the EGSC Division of Mathematics and Science to Dean of the Division.
Dr. Bob Brown grew up in Lyons, and after graduating from high school, attended Georgia Tech, where he received a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering in 1971.  He joined Bell Telephone Laboratories in 1971 in Holmdel, NJ and did research and development in satellite communications systems for 24 years.  He led a development group that designed the payload for the Telstar 3 satellites.  Telstar 302 was launched on the first mission of the Space Shuttle Discovery in 1984.  In 1993, Dr. Brown was appointed Program Manager for the Telstar 4 satellites that replaced the Telstar 3 Constellation.
He returned to Georgia in 1995 and led a group that did research and development in high speed fiber optics technology that contributed to a large increase in the data capacity of domestic and international networks helping spur the growth of the internet.  His last assignment in Research and Development was with the management team at Agere Systems (a spin-off of Lucent Technologies) that developed, tested, and brought to market highly secure wireless (Wi-Fi) products that provided high speed access to the internet.
In 2002, Dr. Brown joined East Georgia College (now East Georgia State College) and became Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science.  In 2007, Dr. Brown was appointed Chair of the Division of Math and Science.   His division established the first four year program at East Georgia State College.  In spring 2014, the first two Bachelor of Science in Biology graduates received their diplomas. The greatest satisfaction that Dr. Brown experiences is working with East Georgia State College students and sharing with them the many practical uses of mathematics and science that help make our technological world possible.
“I feel very honored to be named Dean of the Division of Mathematics and Science and to work with the fine team at East Georgia State College to advance the college’s impact in helping our students in the region achieve educational excellence,” stated Dr. Brown.
