Dr. White named to Governor’s Teaching Fellows Program

East Georgia State College Associate Professor of Physics, Dr. Yelena White, has been chosen to participate in the Governor’s Teaching Fellows Program for the Academic Year 2019-2020. This prestigious program was established in 1995 by Zell Miller, governor of Georgia, 1991-1999, to provide Georgia's higher education faculty with expanded professional development opportunities.
“I am very excited to participate in this educational opportunity. I am looking forward to learning and applying new strategies and sharing with my colleagues,” said Dr. White.
To date, more than 75 different disciplines, professions and teaching areas have been represented by the Fellows, and they have come from more than 45 institutions statewide.
“Congratulations to Dr. White for her selection as a Governor’s Teaching Fellows Program for the Academic Year 2019-2020,” said Dr. Jimmy Wedincamp, Dean of the School of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. “Her dedication to improving teaching and learning at EGSC will reap benefits for faculty and students alike.”
The Academic Year Symposia Program allows participants to attend three-day symposia held six times over the academic year while also engaging in instructional improvement projects on their home campuses. The symposia include a combination of structured instructional and faculty development activities as well as self-directed activities designed to meet individual needs.
“The Governors Teaching Fellows Program is highly prestigious and selection is extremely competitive. The College is proud of Dr. White’s achievements which resulted in her selection to this program,” said Dr. Bob Boehmer, President of EGSC. “Also, we look forward to Dr. White bringing back to our college innovative ideas and techniques which will contribute to the continuous improvement of the college’s learning environment. The college deeply appreciates Dr. White’s commitment and excellence in contributing to a high quality learning environment at the college.”
“The Governor’s Teaching Fellows program brings together some of the system’s finest faculty to provide professional development related to best practices and current trends in higher ed,” added Dr. Deborah Vess, Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs. “The program speaks directly to EGSC’s focus on student success through excellent teaching and innovative course and program design.  This is a great honor for Dr. White that recognizes her many professional accomplishments.  Dr. White’s focus on the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning will speak well for the College in this program, and we look forward to seeing what resources she will channel into her classes and share with others as a result of the program.”
Dr. White joined the faculty of East Georgia State College in the fall of 2010.
