During Open Education Week, March 7 - 11, 2016, Affordable Learning Georgia highlighted the Calendar Year 2015 efforts of University System of Georgia faculty and staff for their outstanding accomplishments in affordable learning materials with the Textbook Transformation Awards. Each institution was invited to nominate an awardee through their ALG Campus Champion. On March 8, 2016, Dr. Dee McKinney of East Georgia State College was one of those awarded for their accomplishments.
“She has retooled all of her history courses to use OERs created by herself in lieu of a traditional textbook, saving EGSC students thousands of dollars in textbook [costs],” said Amanda McKenzie, EGSC Library Director.
Open Education Week’s goal is to raise awareness about free and open educational opportunities that exist for everyone, everywhere, right now. The event highlights how open education can help people meet their goals in education, whether that’s to develop skills and knowledge for work, supporting formal studies, learning something new for personal interest, or looking for additional teaching resources. It is celebrated every year in March.
