Congratulations to our first FESA Scholarship recipient!

East Georgia State College recently awarded its first Fire and Emergency Services Administration degree scholarship to James “Jimmy” Beck, a senior at EGSC. Beck is a lieutenant with the Winder Fire Department in Winder, Ga. and completed his Associate of Applied Science in Fire Science Technology before coming to EGSC in January of 2016. Lt. Beck is one of the inaugural students in the FESA Bachelor’s Degree program and plans to graduate within the next year.
“Many of our non-traditional students are reluctant to seek funding for their education in the form of loans or financial aid,” said Beverley Walker, FESA Program Director. “Many are paying out of pocket or depend upon employer reimbursement programs to fund their education.”
The scholarship, in the amount of $1,000, was obtained by EGSC’s Office of Institutional Advancement. As the only bachelor program of its kind in the state of Georgia, the EGSC Fire and Emergency Safety Administration program meets a unique need.
EGSC’s Bachelor of Arts in Fire and Emergency Services Administration (FESA) was launched in Spring 2016, becoming the only fire and emergency services administration Bachelor’s degree program in Georgia. Delivered online to fire and emergency service professionals seeking to advance their careers, EGSC’s FESA program responds to a great need and creates a career pathway for firefighters, emergency services personnel, and others interested in public administration management.
At the same time, according to the U.S. Fire Administration, there is a concerning lack of appropriate training and inadequate facilities and equipment to maintain basic fire and EMS response capabilities among the U.S. fire service in rural areas.
“EGSC is committed to ensuring that students have opportunities for scholarships and other financial aid in order to provide a better life for themselves, their families and their communities,” said Elizabeth Gilmer, Vice President for Institutional Advancement.
