Saturday, September 23, 2017, East Georgia State College held their annual Bobcat Regatta, where participants construct boats made only of flat cardboard and duct tape and attempt to cross Ezra Pond. This year, the 13 teams from campus and community showed their mettle, with some making their way across the pond easily, while others hardly made it off the shore.
Awards are given in several categories: Most Creative/Best Use of Theme (this year’s theme was “Books”), Overall Winner (those who cross the pond fastest in their first attempt and then in the championship round), the Titanic Award (for those who sink in the most spectacular fashion), and the Community Award for non-EGSC participants.
This year’s Overall Winner was Boat #11, Jenny, consisting of members Jacob Daniels, Ryan Desbians and Chandler Cross. Their boat, fashioned to look like the Jenny from Forrest Gump, not only crossed the pond the fastest, but also appeared to hardly take on water at all!
Most Creative/Best Use of Theme also went to Boat #11, Jenny.
The crowd-favorite Titanic Award went to Boat #3, with members Kaylyn Dailey, Martez McKinney, Khari Jernigan and Asia Harden. Their boat, The Mystery Machine, sunk in the most entertaining way to earn them this award.
The Community Award was presented to Boat #12, Swainsboro High School’s TSA 1, with members Blake Williams, Roberto Pinneiro and Damien Tharp.
“Thanks to everyone who came out to the Regatta,” said EGSC Student Life Director Vicki Sherrod. “A lot of hard work and duct tape went into making these boats, and I hope a lot of fun was had by all!”
