East Georgia State College faculty, staff, and students gathered recently to dedicate the new Learning Commons at East Georgia State College Statesboro at 10449 U.S. Highway 301 South. The event was held on September 27.
With the Learning Commons, EGSC is strengthening its learning environment by focusing on support services that will assist students in completing a college degree. The Learning Commons will include the Academic Center for Excellence (ACE) comprised of an advisement center, tutoring center and computer lab. ACE will also include areas for individual research, group discussion and classrooms. The Learning Commons also includes a new coffee shop named Common Grounds II.
These, and other changes, support EGSC’s mission of (1) Providing access to higher education, (2) Cultivating student academic success, (3) Engaging students to understand the responsibility of service, and (4) Enhancing economic and cultural opportunities that foster community growth.
By creating a highly functioning academic environment for students, EGSC is preparing a new generation of college graduate leaders who are civically engaged, globally aware and proactive in their approach to problem-solving and community-building. Increasing graduation rates is an institutional goal that also complements Governor Nathan Deal’s Complete College Georgia initiative.
This initiative seeks to increase college graduation rates in Georgia by 2020. As stated by Gov. Deal, 42 percent of Georgia’s population holds some form of a college degree. By 2020, that percentage should be 60 percent for the state to remain economically competitive.
